Best Of Atlanta 2008 After Dark Large

After Dark

When it comes to music and nightlife, Creative Loafing readers are about as divided as an Alaskan moose hunter. at an Obama rally. As a result, seven out of 57 After Dark categories resulted in dead heats. Unfortunately, there were no hanging chads to quibble over — music writer Chad Radford notwithstanding. Instead, he and the rest of our esteemed critics opted to muck up the process even more by adding our picks to the election debacle. So whether you voted for the Black Lips or the Selmanaires (local overall music act); Pop Death Squad or Tight Bros. (local promoter); or Charlie Brown or Mary Edith Pitts (drag queen), rest assured that your vote was ignored by we the critics. Because, after all, that's what this great nation of ours was founded upon — giving citizens the illusion that democracy matters. God bless America.

125 E. Court Square, Decatur. 404-687-0990. www.brickstorepub.com. Atlanta is lucky to enjoy many great local beers and restaurants featuring a wide variety of brews. But nothing compares to the amazing experience at the BRICK STORE PUB in Decatur. The atmosphere of the pub, its large selection of beer from all over the world, and the thorough knowledge of all the employees make the Brick Store stand out. Filled with the smell of delicious beer, the pub is welcoming to everyone, from the connoisseur to the novice. Nowhere else can one enjoy as many Belgian varieties. Whether it's a local beer from Georgia, a microbrew from Colorado, or a traditional Belgian or German ale, the staff is always willing to help people choose something that fits their taste. But be warned: The selection is limited to what many (including this writer) consider to be higher-quality beer, so no Bud, Miller or Coors. less...

The new outdoor home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE AT ENCORE PARK, is perfect for north Atlantans overwhelmed with $4 per gallon gasoline treks to downtown con-cert venues. The $35 million amphitheater seats more than 12,000 and covers 45 acres in Alpharetta, yet the shows feel intimate. An impressive upcoming lineup includes John Mayer in August, O.A.R. in September, and the Black Crowes and Phil Lesh in October. Plus, the three separate public parking lots allow for a nearly hassle-free exit that cuts your idle time in half. The best perk? Clean, low-humidity restrooms. less...

"Harpo, this here is our juke joint!" Like a scene straight out of The Color Purple, SUGARHILL stands as Atlanta's contemporary juke joint. It's dark, sexy and laid-back, with plenty of local soul bouncing from the stage. The intimate scene allows you to get up close and personal with the artists, while you cozy up next to that special someone. Sure to satisfy your sweet tooth for homegrown R&B/soul, Sugarhill is addictive. The weekly Tuesday Jam session, hosted by Joi with DJ Kemit, is full of surprises - you never know who might hit the stage, from the soulful sounds of Eva Kennedy and Phillipia to the hard-hitting hip-hop of Malachi and Hollyweerd. Since it's located in Underground Atlanta, it stays open until 4 a.m., which causes me to be late to work almost every Wednesday. 50 Upper Alabama St. 404-658-0068. www.sugarhillatl.com. less...

Like a thief in the night, VERA FANG emerged from the house-show and DIY-gallery scenes with a debut 7-inch that rocked. The kids who comprise the group had been hanging out around town forever, but who knew they were lying in wait, ready to pounce when the local punk scene least expected it. Sunni Johnson shreds her bass to pieces in ways that leave audiences wondering if her mother checked her scalp for the mark of the beast at birth. Vera Fang crafts sharp, sinister hooks and surrealist imagery that merges bits of fairy tale and feminism in a whirl of addictive punk dirges. www.myspace.com/verafangatl. less...

The HIGHLAND INN BALLROOM is the quintessential lounge. The high tin ceilings, stucco walls, wide hallways and doors cue thoughts of a midcentury Parisian cafe, while the dim lighting, ample seating and slinky tunes impart that old familiar cool. Best of all, there's rarely a lack of conversation and companionship. The Highland Inn draws no shortage of waylaid travelers who wander in, drawn to the relaxed atmosphere. Bands and DJs entertain with a vibe as eclectic as the guests. Retro-rare, country, jazz, experimental ballin' and blues take center stage on any given evening. The most recent jewel in the Inn's royal crown is the monthly Fringe Factory. Whatever patrons seek - a quiet evening off the radar or a full-on hipster crush - it's hard to disagree, the Highland Inn Ballroom is Atlanta lounge nobility. 644 N.
