All that talk about Atlanta being the “Hollywood of the South” sure rings true these days, with multiple movies being shot all over the metro area on an almost daily basis. But one studio seems to be more all-in when it comes to filming in the ATL than any other: MARVEL. Whether it’s down south in Fayetteville at the Pinewood Atlanta Studios soundstages or on the streets of Downtown, the folks at Marvel are mounting their copious comic book adaptations — blockbusters like Spider-Man, Black Panther and The Avengers — at a breakneck pace. And with films already in production for years to come, get ready to see costumed-clad folks running around town for a good long while. www.marvel.com. less...

Since ADULT SWIM’s launch in 2001 as an arm of Cartoon Network, the channel has soared from underground sleeper to prime time heavyweight. Offbeat late-night animated content like “Robot Chicken” and “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” anchor the channel, but recent years have brought on the advent of hilarious new series such as Brad Neely’s “Harg Nallin Sclopio Peepio” and 2015’s Internet-breaking “Too Many Cooks” short. Folks joke the staff of Adult Swim may be “on something”; would it be too far of a wager that “something” is “fire”? www.adultswim.com. less...

Atlanta writers/producers and Floyd County Productions founders Adam Reed and Matt Thompson rose in the ranks at Cartoon Network with Adult Swim shows such as "Sealab 2021." They proved ready for prime time with the animated spy spoof and FX smash hit "Archer." The raunchy cartoon's popularity surged in its second season and has been renewed for a third. While "Archer's" voice actors, including "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Chris Parnell and comedian Aisha Tyler, live out of town, the regulars include local actors Amber Nash and Lucky Yates. The Atlanta-based production proves that an independent animation studio like Floyd County Productions can deliver comic programming to take on Hollywood. fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/archer. less...

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES’ “FUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES” is hosted by Tom Kenny, the voice of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” who delivers an engaging lineup of G-rated classic film for kids. But it also gives the next generation a lesson in Film Appreciation 101. Kenny sets up goofy introductions with a cast of real-life kiddies that evokes those creaky, locally produced TV movie nights. Tentative titles for next summer include National Velvet and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father. The only downside is explaining to your 4-year-old that SpongeBob is actually a lanky white guy in nerd glasses.
