Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar
Atkins Park gets a bad rep for food because it's mostly known as a bar. It's honestly one of the best restaurants in Atlanta, way beyond bar food. "Bar" comes before "deli" in the name of this brave little establishment, and for good reason. A charming Italian restaurant in the respectable hours, a boisterous beatnik headquarters when the lights dim, NONI'S BAR & DELI has administered new life to a storied street. After two years, its hipster hangout status is no longer top secret. Without TVs or video games, it's sleek and sophisticated, all while keeping a Sicilian grandmother's touch. And the Saturday night dance parties have become the sweatiest and most talked about in the city. If only grandma's cookbook called for all those PBRs and shots of Jameson. 357 Edgewood Ave. 404-343-1808 www.nonisdeli.com. less...

It’s not the overly familiar watering hole of TV’s “Cheers,” but the atmosphere at THE LOCAL makes it a comfortable destination. The place is usually peopled with a relaxed mix of Atlanta’s party people, busy local scenesters and a measure of the appropriately wacky Ponce characters. The huddled masses rub elbows here with a small-town ease and big-city bustle. It’s a hipster cocktail haven and functioning no-frills restaurant, depending on your needs. Reliable bar food and those oft-cited fries are the way to go, especially in the later hours of operation. Mixed drinks are available, but go for a beer from the well-stocked and pleasantly affordable bar. less...

Pubs in Atlanta have been increasingly devoted to providing decent food as well as booze. Now we have an out-and-out gastropub, TAP, another project of Bob Amick's Concentrics Restaurants. Chef Todd Ginsburg offers a menu of small plates that includes buffalo-style fried calamari, pozole, and toast with chocolate and chorizo. If you want more than grazing fare, there are six entrees, such as roasted scallops with minestrone, and organic chicken and artichoke stew. The decor - yet another Johnson Studio project - highlights brewery hardware, and features a red deer that demonically overlooks the scene. Good beer selection, too. less...

Fried food at bars is a given, but vegetables? That’s the BRICK STORE PUB for ya. Its food menu offers both expected pub fare like brats, burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, and hearty, comforting dishes like pierogi primavera covered in seasonal veggies, and the volcano, a bread bowl bursting with Brunswick stew. You’ll need the sustenance to look over a beer selection so large that it’s housed in a binder. Forget about Buds or Millers — the downstairs bar stocks 17 international, regional and local drafts, plus more than 60 bottled varieties, including English ales, pale ales and German hefeweizens. There’s also a Belgian bar upstairs with eight rotating drafts and more than 100 options. On the rare occasion your table may agree on a single beer, the reserve list offers a few 5-liter personal kegs. What a centerpiece. less...

Fattening, messy, burger-centric: These are all the things good bar food should be about. And it’s exactly what THE EARL dishes out while some of the area’s best bands crowd the hyper-popular East Atlanta spot. Not only do the staffers serve up chili dogs and burgers that cushion the belly for a long evening out, but their rockin’ brunch is heaven-sent if your Saturday night lasted well into Sunday morning. The steak sandwich loaded with peppers, onions, provolone and mushrooms is as much sloppy fun as making out in one of the bar’s dark booths.

We have seen (and tasted) the future of bar food, and it's being served at HALO LOUNGE. Chef Stephan Leed's outre creations outdo any other offerings being served in a dark, smoky room in town. Just the descriptions alone are enough to pique interest: truffled mac and cheese, collard greens with vanilla vinegar and the Bad Ass cheese plate are just a few. Food is served 5-10 p.m., before the swank crowds start to fill the even swankier space. Come early one night and check it out. One question, though: Do we really have to pay $4 to taste "Stephan's salty nuts"? "817 W. Peachtree St., Suite E-100, 404-962-7333. www.halolounge.com" less...
