In addition to providing a new drooling venue for contemporary-furniture enthusiasts, CONTEXT has taken the pioneering step of opening its spacious downtown showroom in a historic 1930s building that originally housed a car dealership serving nearby Sweet Auburn. The store specializes in monochromatic modernist pieces — such as a series of overlapping drawers that looks like a bright-red, free-standing spiral staircase — as well as designs that make innovative use of natural fibers and organic materials, as with floor fans fashioned from chrome and woven rattan. Just in is a line of exquisitely restored vintage chairs from such masters as Marcel Breuer and Eero Saarinen, proving everything old is new again. less...

When we first saw the blue and yellow building hovering on 17th Street, we almost thought we heard angels singing. For Atlanta’s broke, thrifty and style-conscious folks, IKEA has been a godsend of epic proportions. The simple bookcases are perfect for keeping our pint-sized apartments organized, the kitchen cabinet selection is just right for those looking to refurbish and reorganize on a tight budget, the mattresses are the ideal price for kids coming out of dorm life, and for those willing to splurge just a little, the leather couches are just what the doctor ordered for hip living rooms citywide. less...

The hulking warehouses of MANORISM, overflowing with real and mainly reproduction antiques, embody eclectic decorating. Red-lacquered chests marry rusty iron chandeliers and give birth to wicker chairs with contemporary cushions. Dark, hand-carved imported wood furnishings dominate the showroom floor, with primitive stools made for peasants and ornate beds fashioned for emperors showcased side by side. The huge rug selection may have the deepest discounts in the city: weavings of wool, rags, rattan, leather and more are slashed well below retail price. Whether you're looking for a creaky roll-top desk with ink bottle and parchment, a modern Danish cabinet in sleek rosewood or an inflatable room shaped like the Epcot globe (yes, they have one - for less than $400!), AMSTERDAM AVENUE ANTIQUES is a good bet. The booths in this far-from-stuffy antique mart run the gamut and, unlike most classic or funky furniture stores in the city, the prices don't require that you possess a Swiss bank account.
