Now that health food stores are sprouting up like alfalfa, organic veggies and tofu dogs are as easy to score as Big Macs. The access is great, especially since it makes healthy eating an option for everybody. But nothing kicks granola butt like SEVANANDA. The Little Five store has long been a neighborhood fixture, and it's still a great place for locals in need of a few staples. The community-owned cooperative carries a variety of groceries, household products and prepared foods, along with rows of sweet-smelling incense. There's enough in stock to satisfy your cravings, but not so much that you can't get your groceries and get going quick. "467 Moreland Ave., 404-681-2831. www.sevananda.com" less...

The tree-lined drive through Decatur toward Scottdale is a soothing prequel to the garden of holistic delights at this small and modest herb store. Ellen Chen opened Ginseng & Herbs 11 years ago to carry on the herbalist traditions she learned from her family in China. Although the store does have various pre-packaged pills and potions, Ginseng & Herbs specializes in personal consultations that require fairly thorough questions and answers, a peek at your tongue and a long listen to your pulse. All hand-mixed remedies are scooped from the intriguing dried flora Mrs. Chen pulls from the scads of wooden doors and cabinets behind the counter. All herbs are imported from China, where Chen says the most-advocated treatments combine Eastern and Western prescription. less...

Ahh ... a health food store where vegans, lacto-ovos and omnivores can shop peacefully together. A health food store where you can get Rice Dream or ice cream, tofu buffalo wings or real drummers. There's also a wine and beer section and a health and beauty section that includes the most expansive Tom's line we've ever seen, Burt's Bees products, loose herbs, aromatherapy products, ear candles and more. Spacious, spankingly clean and inviting, from the lush produce section to the comfy booths at the exit, where you can take a load off and have a snack from the bakery, the sandwich shop, the to-go section or the hot food station. Best of all, the store is free-flowing with the samples. Look for a new location in Sandy Springs in August 2001. less...

From two Sanskrit words pestled together — seva, meaning service, and ananda, meaning bliss — this community-owned herb and whole-food grocery health stop has been a CL readers' pick for years. Sevananda's member support has kept it afloat since '74, and it is one of the oldest and most bountifully stocked markets and herb buffets around. Members pay a $100 one-time fee for a lifetime of discount prices, although nonmembers may shop there, too. The herb staff, including one certified part-time herbalist, knows their stuff and can offer counsel for appropriate remedies. The counter displays numerous reference materials that the public is welcome to browse, and herbs, both medicinal and culinary, are sold in affordable bulk prices. (Sev also boasts a hot-food bar and deli that caters mostly to vegan appetites.) less...
