The good news is that the Houston-based company is looking for a location in Midtown. Meanwhile, a Hank’s has opened inside Wakefield Foods near the airport in College Park. Yes, it’s worth the drive to stock up. The butter pecan takes that classic to a new level. The black walnut is better than oral sex. When Valentine’s Day rolls around, Hank’s sells rose-flavored ice cream, maybe the most exotic flavor we’ve tasted outside the kitchen of a molecular gastronome. less...

Jake’s Ice Cream

The little plastic tasting spoon isn’t necessarily your friend at JAKE’S ICE CREAM. The merest sample can induce you into ordering at least a scoop of flavors you wouldn’t guess you’d like, like Coffee and Doughnuts or Brown Sugar. What makes Jake’s ice cream stand out isn’t just its vibrant flavors, but its subtlety: the Brown Sugar ice cream isn’t gritty or cloying, but a smooth caress of your taste buds. The Chocolate Slap Yo Mama (sometimes known as Chocolate Slap Happy) is justly celebrated, being not so much an ice cream flavor as an enhanced chocolate delivery system, while the Coffee and Doughnuts arguably qualifies as breakfast in a waffle cone. Even if you get an ice cream headache, you’ll probably just say, “Thank you, can I have another?” less...

We’re blessed with some irresistible ice cream and gelato shops, but ever since we tasted the rose-petal ice cream at HANK’S last Valentine’s Day, we’ve been returning to this tiny shop across from Zoo Atlanta. Run by people who treat children with amazing patience — and there are always children at the shop — Hank’s is as big-hearted as it is generous with portions. Caramel-pecan is our routine selection. We didn’t know it was possible to get so many pecan halves in one scoop of ice cream. The banana-nut is also heavenly, though the butter-pecan seems to be everyone’s fave.

Earlier this year, word spread quickly among ice cream aficionados when HANK’S ICE CREAM PARLOR, a small chain based in Houston, opened a modest store across from the zoo in Grant Park. The buzz was generated for good reason: The ice cream, made in-store, rocks. The signature butter pecan is crammed with toasted pecan halves, though we’re just as partial to the banana pudding flavor full of Nilla wafers. The almond joy, with its coconut jolt and chunks of chocolate, is another brain-freeze favorite. Welcome to Atlanta, Hank! “753-A Cherokee Ave. 404-622-0007.” less...

Hotlanta is finally a city chock full o’ great ice cream joints, and JAKE’S ICE CREAM & SORBETS leads the pack. Jake’s stuff is made on the premises and is so rich it leaves a coating of cream on the roof of your mouth. The flavors are wonderfully zany, from root beer to animal crackers to coffee and donuts. We scream for the Key lime pie ice cream, featuring a Key lime pie chucked into a brown-sugar vanilla base. The staff is gracious about letting you try new concoctions, though most of us inevitably order the Chocolate Slap Yo Mama anyway. “676 Highland Ave., 404-523-1830, and other locations. www.jakesicecream.comless...

Dulce de leche, stracciatella and Heath Bar flavors are all quickly approaching cult status. Some of us, though, most love their crepes spread with Sarabeth’s blood orange marmalade and topped with a simple scoop of vanilla bean-flecked gelato. Welcome to cloud nine. “1402-7 N. Whether you visit the North Highland or Piedmont Avenue store, JAKE’S ICE CREAM & SORBETS has no equal in our city. Basics like chocolate and vanilla get elevated to gourmet status, and seasonal flavors - including a rapturous honey-fig, a willowy pumpkin and an apple pie (in which two actual pies get chucked into the batch as it mixes) - make Jake’s a year-round destination. Cozy, homey ambience in both stores only adds to the pleasure. The creamy, classic rich American ice cream filled with sometimes weird ingredients (like Girl Scout cookies) or Kenya AA coffee makes Jake’s the ice cream we always scream for. “676 Highland Ave. 404-523-1830; 970 Piedmont Road. 404-685-3101.” less...

Maybe it’s the cutesy signs, the happy-face fan mail from adoring kids or the library of remainder books. But we couldn’t care less. We’d stand in line with a smile at an STD clinic for a cup of Jake’s Chocolate Slap Yo’ Mama, Brown Sugar Vanilla or Kenya AA. What really turns us into tongue-lapping, moaning slaves is the honey-fig - clouds of soft, dense ice cream laced with honey into which fresh figs have been folded. less...

We sweated this category, going back and forth between here and nearby What’s the Scoop? And, of course, Jake’s gave us pause. Hell, we even drained the soft-serve at Zesto. We believe Venetian Paolo Dalla Zorza’s madcap little gelato shop deserves the award — certainly on the basis of his product’s quality --- but also because a visit here has such tremendous entertainment value. (The novelties include ice cream that looks like a bowl of spaghetti.) Zorza, who could sell Ferraris to nursing-home occupants, charms everyone who walks through his door. less...
