Move over, yoga and Pilates. A long-ignored form of Russian strength training is making a comeback, and disciples swear that two months of the exercise does more to lift the derriere (and improve balance and agility) than a year’s worth of sun salutations. KETTLEBELL TRAINING AT STUDIO LOTUS offers a departure from the mat classes and private instruction that are typically offered at the Morningside Pilates studio. Attendees of any of the seven weekly Kettlebell classes ($185 for a once-a-week, eight-week series) will be greeted with a cast-iron, bell-shaped weight with a handle on top, which is swung using both arms in various arcs and loops. In less than an hour, the low-impact exercise burns fat, sculpts muscles and offers a rigorous cardio workout. Expect to be sore — to the point of not being able to sit. less...

The ATHLETIC CLUB NORTHEAST stands above the local pack of gyms for two reasons: space and amenities. The sheer size and layout of this cavernous club means patrons have room to move - the whole point of a workout, “n’est pas”? We like to use workout machines “without” feeling the sweaty spray of nearby strangers (we prefer that sensation at nightclubs, thanks). The amenities are lush and plentiful: basketball, indoor and outdoor swimming, tennis, racquetball, sauna, whirlpool ... Yes, it’s a tony gym. Yes, it’s worth it. “1515 Sheridan Road. 404-325-2700. www.acnortheast.com.less...

1100 Clairemont Ave., Decatur 404-377-0241 http://www.ymcaatlanta.org The Decatur-DeKalb Y remains the healthiest health club in town for a number of reasons. Naturally, it’s healthy to go to the place, which has a full range of athletic facilities, including a pool, a sauna, basketball courts, aerobic equipment and circuit training. Relatively speaking, it’s healthy on your wallet: $46 a month for individuals and $68 for families is very reasonable for a full-service club (that’s true of all Ys, which simply are a bit better of a buy than the for-profit clubs). But the really special thing about the Decatur-DeKalb Y is that it’s healthy for you socially: While it’s clean and luxurious enough for most yuppies, there’s a nice cross-section of folks there, with very little of the “I’m-a-better-jock-than-you attitude that can permeate health clubs. less...

With such class names as “Dueling Divas,” “Phenomenal Abs” and “Rear Attitude,” the six Atlanta Crunch Fitness locations have furthered the trendy national chain’s credo of fitness with an attitude. If you prefer not to exercise in a herd, you can hit their boxing ring for a few rounds or use the Hypoxic Chamber, a high-altitude training simulator. The Crunch website asserts that, “We don’t care if you’re 18 or 80 ... fat or thin ... short or tall ... muscular or mushy ...,” but you can rest assured that the blonde in front of you with the tight ass sure as hell does. less...
