Trio Da Kali, Derek Grippers African Strings Project

Wednesday September 27, 2017 08:00 pm EDT
The balafon (xylophone) is an unmistakable staple of the West African music. The playful plonking of mallets on hardwood keys, interacting with bass and percussion is a universal invitation to groove. Trio Da Kali features a talented lineup of second generation Malian musicians including Lassana Diabaté (balafon), Mamadou Kouyaté (ngoni) and singer Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté. For their first and only Southeastern appearance, the trio performs songs from Ladilikan, a new collaboration with the Kronos Quartet. Lassana Diabaté’s balafon work and Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté’s impressive octave range provide a particularly bright ray of light, while Kouyaté holds down the rhythm. It’s unfortunate that Kronos Quartet won’t be joining them for this show, but it’s a great opportunity to witness three Malian musical master at the top of their game.

Atlanta’s Ryan Taylor Band and Touring Trio Bay Station Play Red Light

Thursday June 8, 2017 08:00 pm EDT
Touring West Coast Americana trio Bay Station shares the evening with Atlanta-based Ryan Taylor Band, who combines mandolin, banjo and acoustic and electric guitars to create a layered sonic blanket of roots music. It’s a night of strong songwriting, vocal harmonies and dynamic acoustic instrumentation Bay Stationhttp://baystationband.com/ “This band admirably reflects the wealth of music explored by Hot Tuna, they have that James Gang (Joe Walsh) metabolism, that Grateful Dead / Jerry Garcia Band (with Donna Jean Godchaux) homegrown classicism, and that ability to strike just the right chord with everyone in an appreciative audience.” - John Apice, No Depression Bay Station finds California-based songwriter/musicians Kwame Copeleand and Deborah Crooks combining their talents and enlisting the help of several musical compadres to create a diverse form of Americana and rock music. In 2014 under their former name KCDC they released Your Own Reaction; a 10-song collection of Americana and rock drawing on their literary chops and post-punk and twang tendencies. Their follow-up recording, Go Out and Make Some is a true melting pot of Americana, blues, jazz and rock and roll, with songs about love, lust, sandy beaches, dusty roads, wandering holy men, wolf birds and more. Ryan Taylor Bandhttp://www.ryantaylorband.com/ The latest effort from Americana artist Ryan Taylor is the aptly named Grand Experiment. After years of playing in the vibrant folk/roots scene of Somerville and Cambridge, MA, Ryan Taylor moved back to Atlanta, GA in 2014, a calculated risk that has paid off as Taylor has refined his band’s sound focusing on strong songwriting, vocal harmonies and layering acoustic (banjo, mandolin, guitar and occasional electric) instrumentation to create a dynamic and layered sonic blanket that is the bedrock of American roots music. There are definite bluegrass and folk tendencies found in the sound, with occasional rock elements thrown into the mix, but above all else, the song is king.
