When Wara From the NBHD spoke to CL a couple weeks back, he was describing the theme behind his new EP, If Guns Could Speak. “Why do we care so much when a white person kills a black man but we don’t do the same when we kill each other,” he said. “We won’t call the cops, we won’t care, and we won’t call the news.”

The Brooklyn-born, Clarkston, Ga.-bred MC/producer got high praise for his debut Kidnapped (Playin Four Keeps), and willingness to realistically address topics — guns, drugs, and poverty — that are often glorified in today’s machismo-heavy, “stop snitching” world of rap music. On If Guns Could Speak, Wara’s point is that behind every fatal bullet there’s a story, and these real-life tales cover everything from police brutality, following street politics, or one’s propensity to “move that dope” to make ends meet in dire circumstances.

Wara dropped the EP on Jan. 27, one day after his older brother was released from prison. Peep If Guns Could Speak, below.
