Blaxxx bring frenetic energy to the Mess-Around

Blaxxx, featuring members of the OBN IIIs and Obnox, makes its festival debut at the Atlanta Mess-Around.

Garage-punk supergroup Blaxxx was born out of boredom during SXSW in 2014, when Bim Thomas (Obnox, Bassholes, This Moment in Black History) met up with OBN IIIs’ Orville Neely (bass) and Tom Triplett (guitar) for a just a few hours, piecing together the songs that became the aptly-titled E.P. For No Apparent Reason (12XU Records). The end result is blown-out garage jams, effectively blending the OBN IIIs’ guitar slinging with Thomas’ penchant for noisy, blues-inspired rock ’n’ roll. Practically ad-libbed tracks such as “Let Me Hold Your Hand” should make for a frenetic live set when Blaxxx plays its second show ever tonight (Sat., April 25) at the Earl as part of the Atlanta Mess-Around. Though all four songs are rock throwbacks at heart, the full volume approach to each tune should also appeal to noise rock fans whose ears are still ringing from last night’s Pissed Jeans set.

Blaxxx plays the Atlanta Mess-Around evening show tonight (Sat., April 25) at the Earl with Flamin’ Groovies, Gentleman Jesse, NOTS, and the Gaye Blades. $20-22. 8 p.m. 488 Flat Shoals Ave. www.badearl.com
