An Animated Shadow is a new three-song digital EP that sees the Selmanaires reaching further into the world of Eno-esque chance music and experimental strategies. Rather than continue the breezy mechanics of their Tempo Temporal EP there’s a consciously anti-pop sensibility driving the analog beats and disembodied voices of “Reve” that are cut from the same fabric of foggy textures that defined industrial music in the ’70s (Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk et. al.)... and that’s no comment on the production quality, but the nature of both the kinds of sounds that make up the song, and the kind of machines that hold it together.

There’s a loose framework around which long and gorgeous musical meditations build and maintain an even keel throughout “Now Adrift” and “Toof,” which reflect the influence of spending time on the road backing Atlas Sound, but in abstract ways. These songs are more about establishing their own rhythmic space — they are backgrounds that function as foregrounds while appealing to deeper and higher levels of the subconscious mind.
