Sound Menu April 11 2001 Fri

BLOOD BATH — Amplified Life, who have promoted spoken word, hip-hop and fashion shows, presents some Atlanta DJ talent on Georgia Tech’s campus. Featured are Hazeus, Roger, Enkognito, Jeff M. and 401K, offering up breaks and bass and always giving the drummer some. Under the Couch (Ware)

CASPER HAUSER — Despite this young band’s experimental tendencies, they are aware of key components of exciting rock ‘n’ roll: terror and mischief. Like the din they stir up, the stage seems to fall apart as they pound out the sonics. When’s the last time you heard a rock cover of Throbbing Gristle’s “Discipline” anyhow? Eyedrum (Foy)

THE CHANGELINGS, JANAH, FANCY — The Changelings headline tonight after a few months hiatus for studio recording. Also performing, Atlanta’s Janah noodle around with a Middle Eastern sound. Playing their last show, Myssouri expatriates, Fancy, could come off sparse with their acoustic guitar, upright bass and lap steel, but their songs tend to swirl around your head and in the rafters, while most of the singing is buoyed in a sense of pining. Echo Lounge (Overstreet)

CIGAR STORE INDIANS — Big, bad Ben Friedman recently led his wild Indians through a rompin’ stompin’ set in Midtown for their upcoming live CD, but tonight while the tape is still rolling, the Cigar-warriors will ease back and roll s’more tape on a less rowdy set here at Eddie’s. The show starts at 10 p.m., and it’s 21-and-up. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)

DASH RIP ROCK, MARATHON — A rip-snortin’ return from venerable ol’ crunchers Dash Rip Rock is always a good time. High art it ain’t; it’s good goofy fun for all. Songwriter Chuck Carrier and his Marathon runners open. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith)

DELTA 72 — Churning out a frothy garage mix of Booker T. & the MG’s and The Seeds, this hard-working quartet revels in rolling their R&B and funk roots in the fumes of high-octane, low-fi, raucous rock ‘n’ roll; a sort of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels for the Jon Spencer crowd. Hang on for high-energy, non-stop intensity. The Earl (Horowitz)

DELTA MOON — Friday the 13th: In a crowded little rib joint, two slide guitars speak in tongues and a young woman dances a siren dance. Look out for black cats, rub your mojo hand for luck and hope for the best. Fat Matt’s Rib Shack (Powell)

EVE 6 — A little punk, a little grunge, lots of alt-rock attitude and sing-along lyrics like “your heinous highness broke her hymen” make Eve 6 perfect for the gangly Junior High male ready to throw himself into the mosh pit and thrash around for dear life. If that’s your idea of a fun Friday night, you could do worse than this young trio, who might join you if they weren’t already on stage. Coca-Cola Roxy (Horowitz)

CINDY LOU HARRINGTON — She looks like Julia Roberts, sounds like Loretta Lynn, and (when her electric band kicks up their cowboy heels) she can even rock like Joan Jett. A dynamic, delightful entertainer. She’s performing at 9 p.m. in a new venue across (and down the street a ways) from the DeKalb Farmer’s Market. Anthony’s Music Hall/Decatur (Nicoll)

WILL HOGE — On tour in support of their recently released debut Carousel, Will Hoge seems to have a reputation for energetic live performances. The quartet, comprised of singer Hoge, lead guitarist Brian Layson (who replaced Georgia Satellites’ Dan Baird, who plays on Carousel), bassist Tres Sasser and drummer Kirk Yoquelet, plays music that has been compared to the sounds of Springsteen. Variety Playhouse (Keel)

KING JOHNSON — Friday the 13th is your lucky day if you are seeking a long evening of funky blues from Atlanta’s royal rockers King Johnson. A little roadhouse blues, a little New Orleans funk, and a lot of spirits will make this evening a good time and a blur. Chip’s/Winder (Smith)

MEDICINE MANN — Friday the 13th might be the perfect time to catch this heavy-handed quartet from Nashville, because the band’s seen its share of bad luck in recent years. Now back with a new lead singer and boasting a musical makeover, the Metallica-esque rockers put some pow back into “power groove.” Vagrant Justice opens. 9 Lives Saloon (Butler)

NIGHT OF THE SEX GODDESS — New Atlanta “superclub” Destination, a huge former warehouse, has its glass double doors flung wide open for its first major party, held, of all times, on the supposedly unluckiest day of the year. International talents Noel Sanger (Nettwerk, Sunrise, Musicnow, Balance) and Mike Hiratzka (Essential Dance Music, Ultra, Mafddap) headline with their trailblazer formulas of trance music. Also to play are local residents Patrick Scott (Ultra, Slinkey), Luis Valencia (aka Logic), Marcos Pieras, Michael Scott, Kevin O. and J-Luv. Destination/1269 Pryor Road (Morin/Ware)

JOSHUA RYAN — Following in the Vinyl Boy tradition of bringing big names spinning progressive sounds every Friday, Joshua Ryan steps up as headliner of this week’s Playhouse. Ryan has become known through releases on Slinkey and Fragrant Records as a top-notch trance producer. He is supported by local progressive house/trance DJs including Gabe, Jonathan Allyn and Native Outlander, among others. Masquerade (Ware)

SEKS — Gene Carbonell again hosts the Chamber’s upscale monthly, featuring the best progressive DJs from around the globe. This month Steve Porter, of Florida’s Fade Productions and Balance Promote Group, brings cutting-edge trance and house. Deep, minimal downtempo DJ Ecotekh, of Intelligent Life Form and Kula Productions, plays in the Asylum. The Chamber (Ware)

SQUAT, ORI — These Athens jazz locals open the Twilight Jazz festival with a show on Washington Street in front of the 40 Watt Club. The festival continues April 20 with performances by Steve Dancz and UGA Jazz1 and the African-American Chorale Ensemble, and April 27 with Winard Harper. It’s all free, with donations being accepted for Nuci’s Space, an organization that provides resources and support for local musicians. Twilight Jazz Festival/Athens (Powell)

STAR ROOM BOYS, AMY PIKE AND ONE MORE COLD BEER — Country doesn’t come much more rootsy than the way the Athens-based Star Room Boys play it, complete with pedal-steel twang and wrenching heartbreak in every verse. Former Continentals songbird Amy Pike opens the show with her own house brand of cry-in-your-beer cheer. Star Bar (Nicoll)

SUPERSTITION/STRIP POKER — One night, two reasons to party. This Friday the 13th, everyone into downtown clubbing gets lucky as Karma’s “Superstition” and “Strip Poker” parties merge, making black tie and black cats complimentary accessories. There will be Vegas-style cocktail waitresses, blackjack, roulette and craps tables for prizes, as well as prized tunes by DJs Starboy, Jason Gerry, Kevin O and E3. Karma (Ware)

TRAVISTY THEORY — This travesty leaves much to be proven. If singer/songwriter Travis Harvey has a promising song-crafting voice, it’s painfully obscured by the modern-rock production clichés that boil over in the band’s untitled CD. However, to the assimilated mainstream ear, Travisty Theory’s easily-recognizable sound could indeed prove to be sweet music. Variety Playhouse (Hutchinson)
