Sound Menu May 09 2001 Wed week out

JONATHA BROOKE — Literate singer-songwriter types are hardly burning up the pop charts these days, but if circumstances were different Brooke would be a prime candidate for mass appeal. Her recent release Steady Pull displays a masterly lyrical command, as well as comfortable genre dabbling (hints of electronic and soul percolate throughout) that never sounds like calculated pandering. If intelligent, melodic songs are a turn-on, then this could be the show for you. Smith’s Olde Bar (Robertson)

GUIDED BY VOICES, CREEPER LAGOON — Ohio’s classic rock revivalists return to the road, a home away from home for leader Bob Pollard and company. After their flirt with pop-polish, GBV are now flying behind Isolation Drills, a return to a more rockin’ up-front scrappy sound. Opening act Creeper Lagoon have also gone from lo-fi eclectic pop to a major-label production. But once you get past the first crunchy anthems on their new album, Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday, you realize that songs still hold catchy, peaceful wonder, a reflecting pool of placid gems washed in wavering effects. Variety Playhouse (Ware)

INFINITE POSSIBILITIES — SP & Reality of Universal Gods headline a bill featuring neo-soul band Chilton, local underground hip-hop favorites Liun’s Den and reggae/hip-hop act Foreigna. For more info, call 404-668-5444. Royal Peacock (Sarig)
