AMERICAN DREAM, 3D5SPD — David Railey must be the hardest-working man in the Atlanta scene. Casionova frontman, busy concert promoter and all-‘round scenester, Railey showcases some of his dreamy and azure-hued singer/songwriter material tonight with American Dream. Occasionally spacey and lulling, 3d5spd’s new four-song EP Radial Quartet is a good introduction to the band. Echo Lounge (Smith)
BETTY BLOWTORCH — See Record Reviews. Masquerade (Horowitz)
BILL ANSCHELL TRIO, STEELBLUE — “Friday Jazz” at the High kicks off with local jazzer Bill Anschell and the high-energy bluegrass of steelBlue. Music begins at 5 p.m. and is free for museum members, $8 for the general public. The High Museum of Art (Bethea)
TRIO ELASTIQUE — Gold Sparkle Band trumpeter Roger Ruzow, visiting sax player Julian Sparacino and cellist Kim Lemonde (who has played with GSB on occasion) present an evening of imaginary soundtracks and improvisation. Eyedrum (Khalid)
THE FLOATING MEN, CHIP HOUSTON — The Floating Men, Nashville-based acoustic rockers, stop in at the Attic to play some songs from their new album, Heroes, Felons and Fiends. Mixing anthemic rock and moody ballads, the Men have produced a hook-laden collection that should make for an interesting live set. Eva Hunter opens at 9:30 p.m. Earlier in the evening, former Straight Up Green songwriter/guitarist Chip Houston returns to offer some introspective songs that touch on the spiritual meaning of life in a Bruce Cockburn sort of way. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
BEN FOLDS, REMY ZERO — See Ben Folds feature, p. 76. L.A. by way of AL, alt-rockers Remy Zero perform their Brit-influenced pop, which veers from concise to sprawling and atmospheric (and able to claim copping some Radiohead-isms a couple years before it was cool). Also on the bill is local band Soup. Centennial Olympic Park (Ware)
HIM, GOOD FRIDAY EXPERIMENT — HiM started as a studio side project of drummer Doug Scharin, a member of Codeine and June of 44. HiM’s earlier collections of jazzy dub experimentations, held together with polyrhythmic finesse, feature folks from Tortoise and Isotope 217. But HiM has taken center stage in recent years with an Afro-beat bomp and post-rock pump. Intricate, liquid and electric. Spiritualized-styled locals Good Friday Experiment open with a sound like Pink Floyd gone acoustic. The Earl (Ware)
LIL’ ROMEO — I don’t know, but something in hip-hop heir apparent Lil’ Romeo’s eyes makes me feel like he doesn’t completely buy into the bling-bling machine he’s currently riding. Son of Master P and nephew of Silkk the Shocker, Romeo lays some pre-pubescent flow over your pretty standard Southern bounce beats. EarthLink Live (Hutchinson)
THE PLASTIC PLAN — In their second-to-last show before disbanding, local instrumental new-prog trio The Plastic Plan throw out their usual set list for an evening of new and improvised material. The occasion is the opening of Atlanta artist R. Land’s latest exhibit, “The Cover Show,” in his Inman Park studio. R. Land Studio/27C Waddell St. (Sarig)
POINTER SISTERS — Think these sassy soul-sistahs can maintain the manic pop energy of their neutron dancin’ ’70s heyday without sinking into droopy nostalgia or slick diva-soul? Even without any new music for eight years, they’re consummate stage pros, so the answer is a definitive ... yes they can-can. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Horowitz)
BOBBY VINTON — Thanks to the David Lynch flick of the same name, post-modern hipsters know Vinton best for his early ’60s hit, “Blue Velvet.” Vinton’s initial fame, however, was as a post-Elvis, pre-Beatles crooner, whose saccharine hits such as “Roses Are Red (My Love)” and “Mr. Lonely” are considered rock oldies strictly by tangential association. Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (Robertson)
