Summer in the city. Lagging behind almost every other major metro area in the country, Atlanta finally has its own free summer concert series. “On The Bricks” will kick off in late May and continue through Aug. 17. All shows are performed on, or at least near, the bricks at Centennial Olympic Park. The first few announced bands — Vertical Horizon, They Might Be Giants, Cowboy Mouth and Sister Hazel — sound like a typical half hour on 99X, who not-surprisingly is a major sponsor. Click on www.onthebricks.com for the usual info.

Safe and sound. In an effort to improve the well-being and peace of mind of Echo Lounge patrons — and bands — club booker Cole Skinner has hired a parking lot attendant/security man to stand post at the Village Vidiot and guard the blocks around the venue in the dodgy East Atlanta neighborhood. He’s currently working Thurs.-Sat. and during big shows, but if all goes well, he’ll soon be there six days a week. Maybe The Earl will follow the Echo’s lead.

Local venue Smith’s Olde Bar holds its annual charity gold tournament May 22. Proceeds go to help local musician Bryan Cole, who recently suffered a heart attack and remains in critical condition. For more information, contact the club at 404-875-1522
