A quick guide to what’s happening in nightlife each week

A side of funny

EUGENE MIRMAN is not a fire-starter, but he’s played one on TV. Not exactly a household name as far as comedians go, the Russian immigrant does have a number of esoteric accolades to his name: He created his own college major (comedy); he has a recurring role on Cartoon Network’s “Home Movies”; and his website, www.eugenemirman.com, was voted the Best of 2001 by TV Guide. It’s loaded with all sorts of hilarity like an animated younger Eugene murdering old rock standards.

Now, he’s taken to following indie rockers around and begging for their empty Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. He’s trying to fashion a conducting device that will allow him to read others’ thoughts, much like Doc Brown in the first installment of Back to the Future. Those whose vans he’s been dragged behind include the Shins, Modest Mouse and Ultrababyfat. He pulls into Atlanta with former Ultrababyfatter Shonali Bhowmik (and her Tigers and Monkeys outfit) on her homecoming Sat., March 13.

The show will be filmed for Mirman’s upcoming DVD to be released by Suicide Squeeze in the fall.

“Tonight, tonight is your night, bro”

On Fri., March 12, the Velvet Room welcomes dance club diva AMBER to provide the live versions of a number of songs that clubbers have had resonating in their heads while on their substance or suitor of choice. “Sexual (La Da Di),” “If You Could Read My Mind” and the ubiquitous infomercial compilation track “This Is Your Night” have played behind wee-hour escapades of all sorts. And when you find out that the voice you can always remember when you wake up in a ditch or unknown bed after a night in Midtown or Buckhead belongs to a sexy nymph who kinda looks like an Icelandic Renee Zellweger, you may want to buy her a drink.

They have a club for B-boys?

The Georgia State B-boy Club and Sound Savages Crew presents the second installment in a series of B-boy jams, Triptych Smack Down II on Sat., March 13. Music for the competition is provided by local rare groove re-arrangers/turntable tag team Faust and Shortee, laying down flares with flair.Indian Creek GSU Recreation Area, 900 S.
