Know your graffiti

Not all graf is created equal. Some categories to help you differentiate between works

Tag

A quick and dirty version of a graf artist’s — um, vandal’s — signature.

Etiquette: None.

Throw-up

A more elaborate, sometimes artful version of a tag. Generally uses bubble lettering.

Etiquette: You don’t go over a throw-up with a tag.

Burner

Like throw-ups, but often involving an image instead of lettering — mini-portraits, if you will. Think Krog Street tunnel.

Etiquette: Same as with a throw-up.

Piece

Big, sprawling affairs — even murals — that typically take hours to paint.

Etiquette: You don’t go over a piece, ever.
