cookout in Naples, Fla., benefiting the Salvation Army Family Homeless Shelter; and a Cruise Down Low Country River in Columbia, S.C., benefiting Carolina Children’s Home and SisterCare. Families visiting Bonita Lakes for July 4 can swim, rent paddle boats or participate in other water activities before catching the “Proud to Be an American” parade around 5 p.m. The park also is the site for artisans’ booths and food vendors. The evening culminates with an 8 p.m. concert from Meridian Symphony Orchestra Cellular South Pops, during which military pilots will fly over the lake in time to the music. The 9 p.m.

Acoustic musicians get a chance to pick together during the weekly Appalachian

are heading to the Sunshine State for the Pepsi 400, a stepping stone in the chase for the

2001 Winston Cup title. Dale Jarrett, Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Casey Atwood, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and others will get behind the wheel to run the 2.5-mile oval track in the 43rd annual race.
