“I drove, I stopped, I shopped till I dropped!” That’s what bargain hunters will be saying after this year’s World’s Longest Yardsale, which stretches 450 miles from Gadsden, Ala., to Cincinnati. Starting at Noccalula Falls Park atop Lookout Mountain in Gadsden, the yard sale is set up along U.S. Hwy. 127 through Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio. Glassworks, a multi-use facility in the renovated Snead Manufacturing Building, will open its first exhibit Aug. 20 in the Marta Hewett Gallery. Glassworks 2001, on display through Sept. 20, features glass pieces from resident artists as well as national and international artists. The more than 50 works on display also are for sale. Visitors can stop by the glassblowing and flame-working studios within the building. The Glassworks Cafe offers a bite to eat and a view of the action as artisans create their works. The Historic Columbia Foundation is celebrating the 23rd Jubilee: Festival of Heritage, which focuses on the contributions of African-Americans to South Carolina, Aug. 17-18. The festival opens Friday with a gala featuring Atlanta-based trumpeter Milkshake and Columbia native and jazz vocalist Bess Daniels. Saturday showcases authentic African wares, beverages and foods. Columbia artist John Jones presents The Color of Money: Currency of the Confederacy, an exhibit of oils, acrylics and watercolors of images of African-Americans once featured on Confederate money.
