Arts Agenda - Taking pictures seriously

Now in its second year, the grassroots effort known as Atlanta Celebrates Photography is gaining momentum. Last October, 30 photography shows were mounted in galleries around town. This year, there are more than 60 exhibitions staged in a wide spectrum of venues, from Eyedrum, the Ballroom Studios and Youth Art Connection downtown, to established Buckhead galleries such as the Lowe, Fay Gold and Jackson Fine Art.
“I love it that artists are creating new spaces and shows because of ACP,” says one of the founders, photographer Corinne Adams. For the 2000 event, Teresa Sims and Jennifer Julian present their photos at Swissôtel, and Wendy Phillips will show at the Auburn Avenue Research Library.Thirty-some photographers are putting together “Soul Sacrifices and Photographic Offerings” for a One Nite Stand at the Mattress Factory Oct. 28, the month’s unofficial grand finale.
Atlanta Celebrates Photography brings to view work by emerging and established artists whose work is not often shown in Atlanta. Seeing new work often renews my excitement about photography and pushes me to work on my own projects,” says artist Laura Noel, whose work may be seen at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center where she exhibits Alias America, A Search for American Individuality.
Photography aficionados are invited to the Oct. 14 Celebration Party at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center where Afro Blue’s acid jazz will accompany festive eats. The bash will feature a silent auction of 50 photographs donated by local artists with proceeds to fund ACP’s 2001 lecture series. On Oct. 19, renowned photographer Duan Michals lectures at the Rich Auditorium. And there’s more: Local photographers may register on the ACP website for Portfolio Review Day at Georgia State University Oct. 21.
