Arts Agenda - Welcome to paradise

Looking for the bliss of El Dorado, Shangri-la or Nirvana? That quest might seem impossible in our heat- and traffic-choked city. Enter the Contemporary to deliver us from evil. Transforming its environs for just one night, the art center becomes Paradise for ArtParty 2000 on Sept. 9.This year, honorary chairman Michael Stipe lends his imprimatur to the event that promises a heady cocktail of art, music, fashion, performance and edibles. Outside, under the tented exo-skeleton, the evening’s headliner will be international dance diva Crystal Waters on a bill that also includes performances by electronica band Aerial and Michelle Malone. Between other acts, DJ Zano will spin a web of everything from jazz to dance music. In addition to a 5,000-square-foot dance floor, the Oasis in the back courtyard will tempt guests to indulge in henna tattoos, psychic readings and massage. VIP ticket holders will have access to an air-conditioned rooftop terrace across the street for bird’s-eye views of the bash and the Atlanta skyline.

As always, the annual ArtParty launches the opening for the art center’s fall exhibitions: The Boat of My Life, a room-sized installation by Russian artist Ilya Kabakov; Drawings, by Atlanta artist Corrine Colarusso; mixed-media work by the late James Castle; and architect Wellington Reiter’s Monumental Presence, which meditates on the form and concept of cemeteries through drawings and models. For other visual pleasures, Nexus Press debuts a new artists’ book and the Contemporary studio artists invite guests to visit their creative spaces.

The event is a fundraiser for the city’s largest alternative artspace and should draw more than 3,500 revelers, who are encouraged to “dress to thrill.” — Cathy Byrd
