Mouthful - Ice cream and gelato

HANK’S ICE CREAM PARLORWord spread quickly among ice cream aficionados when Hank’s, a small chain based in Houston, opened a modest store across from the zoo in Grant Park. The buzz was generated for good reason: The signature butter pecan is crammed with toasted pecan halves, though we’re just as partial to the banana pudding flavor full of Nilla wafers. The almond joy, with its coconut jolt and chunks of chocolate, is another brain-freeze favorite. 753-A Cherokee Ave. 404-622-0007.

JAKE’S ICE CREAMS & SORBETSWell, the heartbreaking news is that Jake’s original homey location on Highland Avenue in the Fourth Ward has closed. The comforting news is that you can still get your Nutter Nanner Elvis and Chocolate Slap Yo’ Mama at several other stores around town - including the store in Midtown that now feels like an indispensable part of the ‘hood. 970 Piedmont Ave., 404-685-3101, and other locations. www.jakesicecream.com.

PAOLO’S GELATO ITALIANOA giant plastic ice cream cone and a video in the window tout the frozen dessert phenomena to be found inside this tiny Virginia-Highland boutique. Like a mosquito in your ear, Paolo cheerfully insists that you adore his gelato. Over a dozen creamy choices, chocolates and lollipops keep company with flavored coffees, espresso and cappuccino. 1025 Virginia Ave., 404-607-0055.

WHAT’S THE SCOOP?Owned by Alon Bolshon of Alon’s, this snazzy place with industrial décor makes silky, authentic gelato. Top flavor choice is dulche de leche, a caramel toffee, but there are other faves, including deep chocolate, coconut, stracciatella, Heath Bar and the fruity sorbets. What’s the Scoop? also offers gourmet coffee and sublime sweet crepes, too. 1402 N. Highland Ave., 404-724-0444.??
