Mouthful - Pies

ALPINE BAKERY: Alpine’s pies resemble those you find at any worthy New York (or Jersey) diner and the varieties are endless. Like everything in the shop, the pies — available in virtually any style you can imagine — are made on site daily and rise just as high as the cakes. Each pie except the apple is offered in both small (serves 6-8) and large (serves 16-20).  The chocolate cream pie is especially delectable. 295 Rucker Road, Suite 140, Alpharetta. 770-410-9883. www.alpinebakery.net.??SOUTHERN SWEETS: Out of all the bakeries in Atlanta, this family-run Decatur mainstay is the first place most people recommend when you’ve got cherry on the brain. The bakery hand-rolls its signature flaky crust and fills it with tart, sour cherries swimming in “secret sauce” before covering it with a crunchy layer of crushed sugar cubes. The apple pie is a double-crust pie made with the same dough and filled with 5 pounds of Granny Smith apples. It’s crowned with the same sugary topping as the cherry. The bakery serves others — such as coconut — if creamy pies are more your bag. You can get a piece to go or enjoy it in the eclectic dining room with a cup of coffee while reading your favorite weekly rag. 186 Rio Circle, Decatur. 404-373-8752. www.southernsweets.com.??SWEET AUBURN BREAD COMPANY: Chef Sonya Jones reached superstar baker status when former President Bill Clinton praised her sweet potato cheesecake. But her baked arsenal doesn’t stop there. Stepping into her Auburn Avenue bakeshop feels like you’ve been transported to your family’s kitchen at the peak of holiday baking season. Her Southern pies include buttermilk lemon chess, toasted coconut-pineapple, sweet potato, apple and sticky pecan. Jones’ pies come in miniature sizes, but you can pre-order a regular version if you’re feeding more than yourself. 234 Auburn Ave. 404-221-1157. www.sweetauburnbread.com.
