Lust List 2015: Nathan: Scoot squad, Dua

Age: 23

Relationship Status: Single

At first glance, Nathan might seem like trouble, albeit the good kind of trouble. A tall (he’s 6 feet, 2 inches), dark, and handsome biker-slash-musician with a rebellious attitude and a worn leather jacket, Nathan looks like the love child of James Franco and Russell Brand. He spends his days prowling around town on his Suzuki Cruiser as a Dua delivery guy. When he’s not satisfying appetites for hot and spicy food, the former Mormon plays in two bands, as lead vocalist/guitarist for Microwave and guitarist for Blis. Nathan says he can be over-analytical and a little hotheaded, but that’s hard to imagine given his easy laugh and bright smile.

ROAD TRIPS AND REBELLION

??
When I was 18 I went to college at BYU out in Utah and me and my friend dropped out of college, uh, the first time. I’ve since dropped out twice, but the first time we dropped out we were in Utah. I had a little Geo Metro that I bought for $800 out there and it got, like, 45 miles to the gallon, and it was a little hatchback and we had “It’s party time” spray-painted on the hood. We dropped out of school, then we road tripped. Started in Utah and went down to Arizona, and all the way across through Texas and New Orleans and back here. Then we went up to New York City and just had a bunch of awesome experiences. It was about two months total. We slept in the car. One time we stopped in the middle of a four-way intersection that was off the highway because my friend was tired and we were falling asleep. We woke up to a police officer tapping on our window and being like, “Hey, you’re parked in the middle of an intersection.”

Me and my friend were both Mormon, and at the time I was still practicing. When you’re about to go on a Mormon mission, it’s really stressful, cause you’re about to leave for two years. I technically should have been putting in my papers to do that already, so it felt rebellious. It was exactly the opposite of what we’d been raised to do our whole lives.

What do you like best about your job?

The hours 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and being able to ride around Downtown on a motorcycle, especially in the summer. It’s what I would probably do for leisure anyways.

I have a little Suzuki cruiser. I used to ride a moped for the longest time and that was held together with duct tape and was really really dilapidated. But I found a motorcycle about a year ago and it’s been more fun. My pride and self-image has really improved (laughs).

What band were you obsessed with when you were 14?

I was really into pop punk like Taking Back Sunday and the Matches and AFI.

Kind of all the bands that were playing Warped Tour at the time. I’ve found that my taste in music has changed over time, but I feel like you get to the point where it starts to really regress back to when you first identified with music. I feel like it happens with everyone. I think that the band that I play in now, both bands that I play in now, are kind of reminiscent of Taking Back Sunday and Nirvana-ish and stuff. Kind of grungier pop songs.

What’s your most gruesome childhood injury?

I was really into BMXing when I was in middle school. I remember I broke like 11 bones by the time I was 11 years old. I remember standing up in the seat one time, and I had my hands on the handlebars and rode down a hill and I broke my knee and my rib. I was in a wheelchair. This was in third grade. Throughout elementary school and middle school I broke both ribs probably like two or three times. Probably broken both ankles. I kind of lightened up after a little bit.

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

I think it would be really cool to be like running up walls and doing backflips and being a ninja. I’ve always wished that I could do that, but my figure is like, I’m not built to be that acrobatic.

??
What would be your last meal?

Probably the chicken quesadilla at Corner Tavern with the mango sauce. If you haven’t had that it’s delicious. You’ll lose your mind.

Do you have a favorite quote or a mantra?

It doesn’t matter what you do, it matters how you do it.

What’s the most romantic spot in Atlanta?

Probably going to the Goat Farm at night where the swings used to be. If you take a right, there’s like a little bench and everything. That’s a go-to.

What did you like best about your ex?

The simple everyday things. She would get like ridiculously excited about food.

What’s your own character flaw you’d most like to fix?

Doing things that are motivated by emotions, like getting angry or doing something that I’ll regret later. You look back and the day and you’re like, “Oh man, that was not a big deal. Why did I say that?” I feel like that happens at work all the time cause it’s just like a high-volume, high-stress environment.

What’s your least favorite household chore?

It used to be cooking, but I actually have been getting into cooking lately.

I worked in the kitchen at Brewhouse for a little bit last summer and I met a few friends that were really into cooking. They were talking about how they think it’s like the ultimate art form because it’s visual, and there’s texture and taste and everything.

I’d mostly just eat microwavable meals and Cheez-Its and cereal because even microwavable meals seemed like a burden. Cause you have to wait like five minutes and there’s no immediate gratification.

... I mean on like a day to day, like it takes those 20 minutes to cook a meal or whatever, and otherwise I’d probably throw something in the microwave for five minutes and spend 15 minutes wasting time on Facebook. So maybe, it’s a better use of time.

Name the last book you couldn’t finish.

Walden, Henry David Thoreau. I thought I would be really into it, but I got bored.

What’s the first album you bought with your own money?

Eiffel 65. Like, the starts singing “I’m blue da da dee da du daaa.” I think I was probably in second or third grade.

??
What’s in your pocket right now?

I have a dime. I have a lucky 50-cent piece in my jacket pocket. I don’t know why it’s lucky. I’ve had it as long as I can remember. And I have a phone that’s dead ‘cause I forget to charge it.

What do you value you most in your friends and why?

Pretty much all I do in social situations is analyze things. I like it when people can kind of hyperanalyze social situations and stuff in an objective way cause I think that’s fascinating. A lot of people that are my best friends now it’s because they can tolerate that, cause a lot of people are like, “Shut the fuck up. This isn’t like a deep thing. We’re going to the grocery store.” A lot of times that I’ll hang out with a girl and start talking about something, and they’ll be like “yeah” or have no input on it, it’s kinda like I don’t know if we’re really gonna identify.

What’s your favorite sound?

The neck pickup on a Fender Telecaster through a Fender amp. It has this sort of metallic-ness that you feel like you can almost like reach out and touch. It’s really crunchy and abrasive, but it’s like, rich and it resonates sort of.

Who would play you in a movie?

I think depending on what my facial hair is in the movie and based on people’s responses to delivering food and having people say that I look like actors, it’s always either Russell Brand or James Franco. When I have a beard it’s Russell Brand and when I don’t, it’s James Franco.

What’s the best place to see live music?

Probably the Masquerade. Every single band that’s ever been a favorite band of mine has played there.

What’s the one thing you most hope to accomplish this year?

I wanna spend more time performing music.

What do you know for sure?

That I’m here right now. And I’m pretty sure the sun’ll come up tomorrow. Maybe it won’t, though.
