Beer Pick of the Week - La Rossa Doppio Malto

Although brewed and bottled by European macrobrewer Heineken, this rich, caramel amber lager is quite drinkable. The initial aroma is a bit odd, like wet leaves or a dank cave, but get past the initial impression and the malt flavors are complex and intriguing. Roasted grains, burnt sugar, toffee and whiskey notes are all present, with a hint of spicy hops in the background. The heavy mouthfeel is typical for a dopplebock and is tempered by the tangy finish and persistent carbonation that keep it lively on the tongue until the end. Try it with a cheese sampler or Italian sausage.

Birra Moretti (Heineken Italia), Comun Nuovo, Italy. 7.2 percent ABV.
