Art events to ride out a rainy hump day

Poetry above Underground, Noplaceness at MOCA GA

If you’re looking for places to ride out a rainy hump day, consider dousing yourself with some art events.

Tonight at 6 p.m., spoken word poet and activist powerhouse Alice Lovelace will be performing “Harriet Rising,” a tribute to Harriet Tubman, as part of Elevate Atlanta’s ongoing exhibit in Underground Atlanta. Lovelace performs her poetry in conjunction with fellow artist Lisa Tuttle’s installations of columns featuring images of women from Atlanta organizations that “embody the spirit of Harriet Tubman.”

Theresa Davis, Lovelace’s daughter and winner of this year’s national Women of the World Poetry slam, also performs. Other heralded poets include: Chauncey Beaty, Ayodele Heath, and Mariangela Mihai. More deets here.

Also, CL contributor Cinque Hicks speaks tonight at MOCA GA about the inaugural edition of Atlanta Art Now, titled No Placeness: Art in a Post-Urban Landscape. How does the Facebook age of interconnectedness affect contemporary art in Atlanta? What will art critics from Sao Paulo or Shanghai have to say? What does living in a “post-urban global metropolis” or a “noplace” mean for ATLiens? Talk is cheap but thought is deep tonight, as Hicks discusses these issues at the free event, beginning at 7p.m.
