Weekend Arts Agenda: ‘Summer Turns to Fall’ October 09 2014

And three more highlights for your weekend.

David Shevlino’s Summer Turns to Fall, a collection of paintings, opens Friday at Thomas Deans Fine Art. And it has been more fall-like, finally, hasn’t it? One never knows with Georgia; but one is cautiously optimistic. So now is ripe for Shevlino’s pieces, several of which recreate summer scenes through a soft focus which suggests nostalgia, or waves of heat. With a reception from 6-8 p.m.

FRIDAY

Argonauts: Separated Land opens Friday at Bill Lowe, “an examination of human nature and the innate desire to belong, adapt and dominate our surroundings” — all in an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Portuguese artist Fernando Gaspar. He “creates his work by exploring the stroke, the drawing and the color. It is a quest for the essential in an insistent, physical movement,” the gallery says in an official description. This also includes layering; the sum total contraposes absence/dominance. With a reception from 6-9 p.m.

My very favorite exhibit title belongs to local photographer/painter/writer Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier’s A Myth of Memory New Photographic Lyrics, opening Friday at The 9 Ace Gallery. Marshall-Linnemeier has produced work from around the South, as well as abroad in South Africa and Australia; and has been producing such documents for more than 20 years. With a reception from 7-11 p.m.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY

The thing about Frozen is that everyone is obsessed with it. And now it is on ice, which seems a particular anti-irony. Disney On Ice presents Frozen will be a Philips arena through Sunday, with performances multiple times daily; shows started Wednesday night. (More info here.) Don’t worry, audiences are assuredly allowed to singalong to the musical’s megahit melodies, such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “Let It Go.”
