Weekend Arts Agenda: The Be Downtown Film Festival July 21 2016

Plus: In The Heights and Dad’s Garage’s 21st birthday.

This weekend, GSU’s Rialto Center for the Arts and the Atlanta Film Society join forces with Central Atlanta Progress to present the Be Downtown Film Festival. Celebrating the Rialto’s 100 and the AFS’ 40 year anniversaries, the festival features films presented as intended: as an example both of Friday’s features will be presented in 35mm film. The Festival opens with 1971 hit Shaft, but be sure to catch Space Jam on Saturday.

The Be Downtown Film Festival runs from Fri., July 22, at 7:30 p.m. through Sat., July 23, at 10 p.m., at the Rialto Center for the Arts.

Things might be a little crazy this week, Atlanta, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun. Here’s your weekend agenda all laid out, after the jump.

ON THURSDAY

›› Tonight, a Tony Award-winning show by Lin-Manuel Miranda comes to Atlanta — still your heart, it’s not Hamilton. In The Heights, Miranda’s first Broadway musical, comes to the Aurora Theatre. Following Nina, a sophomore at Stanford with bad news, and the neighborhood she returns to, the show is sure to delight. 8 p.m. at the Aurora Theatre.

ON FRIDAY:

›› Joseph Finder, New York Times bestselling author of The Fixer and Paranoia, comes to Atlanta to promote his new book Guilty Minds. Get your copy signed and meet the man behind some of America’s favorite thrillers. 7 p.m. at the Buckhead Barnes & Noble.

ON SATURDAY

›› Get up early, lace up those sneakers, and make sure your phone is charged. Saturday morning, over 900 people are scheduled to meet at Piedmont Park for a Pokémon GO jog-and-hunt. Make new friends and start the day with some exercise as the group tries to catch ‘em all. Just don’t trample anyone for a Blastoise. 8 a.m. at Piedmont Park.

›› Dad’s Garage Theatre Company, an Atlanta comedy staple, is turning 21. To celebrate, Dad’s Garage will be hosting an improv show, along with a silent auction of cool prizes and items from the company’s two decades of history. 10:30 p.m. at Dad’s Garage.
