It’s Christmastime in the city!

It just wouldn’t be Christmas without mermaids. That’s the way I’ve felt ever since the Weeki Wachee mermaids started making a visit to the Georgia Aquarium, an annual tradition at holiday time each year. The Weeki Wachee mermaids are part of an oldtime Florida roadside attraction originally founded in 1947 featuring young women in fishtail costumes performing in the area’s naturally clear spring water pools. In recent years, the mermaids have begun touring to aquariums around the world, including the Georgia Aquarium.

Last year, I was lucky enough to interview Crystal Videgar, aka Mermaid Crystal, about the process of becoming a mermaid. Check it out online and see if you can catch one of the remaining shows. You’ll probably end up wishing the aquarium would get rid of all those boring old fish and have mermaids every day of the year.

The Weeki Wachee Mermaids perform at the Georgia Aquarium December 18-21. The show is included in the price of admission to the aquarium. For more info, visit the Georgia Aquarium.
