Comic’s Weekly Roundup: Dungeons & Dragons and Beer & Comedy

Comedian Olivia Cathcart’s best bets for seeing some amazing comedy this week.

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see some of Atlanta’s best local comics and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

Mon., June 8Grab some brews at Sweetwater Brewery today at their bi-weekly show, Beer and Comedy Night. For just $10 you get a souvenir pint, beer samplings of a nice variety of Sweetwater beer, and some of Atlanta’s funniest comedians. This show typically packs out so you’re going to want to get there early. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Hosted by Joe Pettis and featuring DJ Durrty Martinez.

>> After all that fun, keep the party going over at Star Bar. Mondays in Atlanta are the best night in of the week for comedy. Star Bar has long been the go-to show in town and it’s easy to see why. Cheap drinks, free admission, good vibes, amazing comedians. Show starts at 9 p.m. in Little Five Points.

Tue., June 9Tuesday will be a night of Dungeons & Dragons-themed comedy over at the Hangar in Old Fourth Ward. The monthly show, Dungeon returns fresh from it’s first comedy festival appearance at the Crom Comedy Festival in Omaha, Nebraska, and the line-up is superb. Host/Dungeon Master Remi Treuer will will conduct one-on-one role-playing adventures with Will Copeland, Lace Larrabee, and Justin Ledlow. Mike Kaiser, Paige Bowman, and Olive Lynch will be performing stand-up inbetween. It’s a fantastic show and absolutely free, so there’s no reason not to miss one of Atlanta’s most popular and crazy shows. Doors open at 8 p.m., show at 8:30 p.m.

Fri., June 12
======>> Comedy megastar Kevin Hart will be swinging by Atlanta this Friday. Hart is one of the biggest names in stand-up. His last two specials, Laugh at My Pain and 2013’s Let Me Explain were released in movie theaters across the country. Hart will be performing on two shows Friday night, and then again on Saturday at Phillips Arena due to tickets sales going through the roof for his Friday shows. If you don’t have tickets yet, your time is running out.

>> Over in Edgewood, the Music Room will be the site of a special show hosted by Samm Severin and Jen Lenny: Samm and Jen’s Totally Awesome Summer Vacation Show. The show boasts a sweet line-up that includes Cherith Fuller, Kevin Saucier, Ian Aber, Dayne Swerdling, Grahamm Edwards, and Julian Modungo. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., show at 9 p.m.. $5

The Weekend  >> Over the weekend, the Laughing Skull Lounge hosts a fantastic comedian, Hari Kondabolu. Kondabolu is a very smart comedian who has appeared on ”Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show,” starred in his own “Comedy Central Presents” special, and released his latest album Waiting for 2042 last year. He’ll be headlining six shows, Thursday through Sunday so you have plenty of chances to catch him … and if you don’t, well, no excuses.

>> On Saturday, head over to the 1AM Secret Show at Smith’s Olde Bar. This not-so-secret show is infamous for having a lot of great comics drop in. Lately the shows has been on a great streak of hosting some amazing out-of-town talent. Don’t miss out on the fun and go! Show starts at 1 a.m., free as can be.
