Comic’s Weekly Roundup: Scene Missing celebrates Stanley Kubrick

Comedian Olivia Cathcart breaks down this week’s best comedy shows in Atlanta

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see some of Atlanta’s best local comics and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

Mon., 6/22
======Start your week off right some Beer and Comedy. The Sweetwater Brewery will be open to those looking for some laughs and hops at 7pm. For $10, you get a souvenir glass, drink tickets, and eight of Atlanta’s funniest comics. That’s one hell of a bargain. Beer and Comedy Night is also dog-friendly in the summer as shows are on the patio when the weather is clear (just make sure to check Twitter or Facebook for weather updates). Show starts at 8pm, hosted by Joe Pettis and featuring DJ DJ Durrty Martinez. Seating is limited and this show packs out, so get there early, friend.

Wed., 6/24 One of my favorite shows returns this Wednesday, it’s the fiLm-obsessed Scene Missing. Each month, comics, writers, musicians, puppeteers, and other artists perform sets based on films. This month’s edition will tackle the works of legendary director Stanley Kubrick; it’s Scene Missing Presents: DR.STRANGELANTA. From The Shining to A Clockwork Orange to Spartacus and beyond, it’s going to be a fun night. Chris Ledford guest hosts a line-up that includes David Perdue, Craig Hoelzer, Brian Emond, Myke Johns, Jay Hansbrough, Adron, Stephanie Farley, and Jason Pierce Mallory. Highland Inn Ballroom doors open at 8pm, show at 9pm. $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Thur., 6/25  Thursday night is a very special, and bittersweet, show at the Highland Inn Ballroom. Atlanta staple, Caleb Synan, will be moving to Los Angeles next month but is having a special Going Away Showbefore he leaves. Synan has long been a regular at the Atlanta Improv, Laughing Skull, Star Bar, and ran the very successful show, OpenToad, in Athens, GA, where he started his comedy career, and in 2014 he won second place at the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival. Synan will be joined on stage Thursday night by an amazing line-up of killers that include David Perdue, Mike Kaiser, Jarrod Harris, Paul Gallois, Craig Hoelzer, Brian Emond, Andrew Michael, and Paige Bowman. Show starts at 8pm, $7.

Fri., 6/26
======Time again to watch comedy in your undies. Well, you don’t have to be in your underwear but the comics will be. This Friday is the Underwear Comedy Party at the Village Theatre where comics bear it all on stage. Show starts at 11pm. Admission is $10 for the fully clothed but free for those brave enough to go in their underwear. The choice is yours.

The Weekend   Another Laughing Skull Comedy Festival alum will be performing this week when Grant Lyon headlines the Laughing Skull Lounge. Lyon won first place at the 2014 SkullFest and was picked as a “Comic to Watch” at the Montreal Just For Laughs festival that summer. He’s also performed on the TV show “Comics Unleashed,” appeared on the syndicated radio show “Bob and Tom,” and can regularly be heard on Sirius/XM satellite radio. Lyon headlines six shows Thursday through Sunday.

Over at the Improv, NBC’s “Undateable” star Brent Morin headlines five shows, Thursday through Saturday. Morin has also performed at the Montreal Just For Laughs festival, appeared on “Chelsea Lately,” “Adam Devine’s House Party,” and Comedy Central’s “@Midnight.”
