Comic’s Weekly Roundup: From the Smiths to Kurt Braunohler

Comedian Olivia Cathcart breaks down this week’s best comedy events, including Kurt Braunohler, Ladie’s Night, Song Missing and more.

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see some local comics and national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

? Mon., Aug. 3
======Just announced last week, Whitney Cummings will headline one show tonight at the Atlanta Improvhttp://atlimprov.laughstub.com/event.cfm?id=407321&cart. The comedian was a longtime regular on “Chelsey Lately” before starring and co-creating her own sitcom, “Whitney,” on NBC. Cummings also co-created the Emmy-nominated show “2 Broke Girls” for CBS. In 2014, she released her second special, I Love You, on Comedy Central and is recording her third special for HBO later this month. Show starts at 8 p.m.

======Comedy shows at breweries have become a fun new trend, replacing the two drink minimum with a much more cost efficient policy. On the first Wednesday of every month, you can check out an array of hilarious comics and delicious brews at Safe Place at Orpheus Brewing. For $15, you get a tour of the brewery, and six beer tastings. Hosted by Anthony Todaro, this month’s show features a fantastic line-up that includes Mike Kaiser, Andrew Michael, Cherith Fuller, and more. Beer starts pouring at 7:30 p.m., show at 8 p.m.
?
? >> If you love the Smiths, you’re not going to want to miss Song Missing’s tribute to the English rock this week at the Village Theatre. This month, comedians, writers, musicians, and more will perform sets based on select songs of the Smiths at Song Missing Presents: HATLANTA FULL OF HOLLOW. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Song Missing is one of the best shows in town. Hosted by Chris Ledford (and accompanied by band leader Noel Stephen), this month’s show features performances from Remi Treuer, Ian Aber, Twinhead Theatre, and more. Doors open at 8 p.m. Show at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 online, $15 at the door.

? One of my favorite venues is the beautiful Highland Inn Ballroom. It’s spacious, well lit, features a nice bar, and is in a great location; it’s a fantastic space for comedy. Other than being the site of Scene Missing the fourth Wednesday of the month, it’s now home to a great new stand-up showcase, Schlitz & Giggles. No more than a couple of weeks old, Schlitz & Giggles has quickly amassed a nice following. If you haven’t been before, check out this week’s show that features hilarious local talent such as Lace Larrabee, Ismael Loutfi, Joe Pettis, and more. Doors open at 7p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m. $10 cash at the door.
? >> One of my favorite Atlanta comedians is the brilliant Mike Kaiser. In addition to some serious comedic chops, Kaiser also boasts a PhD in history (... almost). Kaiser blends his history and comedy backgrounds in his monthly series A Person’s History of the United States. Taking place Thursday night at the Laughing Skull Lounge in Midtown, this month’s installment will hilariously guide you through the history of a plant close to our heart (and lungs): weed. Kaiser will be joined by special guests Samm Severin, John-Michael Bond, and a video by Paul Gallois. Last month’s show was an absolute blast, and this one is sure to deliver. Show starts at 10:30 pm, tickets are $12. Come get stoned smart.
?
? >> Stand-up meets sketch comedy at the Village Theatre this week with the return of the very popular show, Ladie’s Night. Now the first Thursday of the month, Ladie’s Night brings together the film and comedy community to showcase local comics as well as locally produced video sketches. Hosts Joel Ruiz, Brian Emond, and Zach Lamplugh will screen four new sketches that will be judged by the audience and a panel of special judges from Adult Swim with the most popular sketch group receiving bragging rights and an automatic spot in next month’s show. This month’s show will also feature stand-up from Paul Gallois, Samm Severin, Chris Ledford, and Anthony Driver. Show starts at 10:30 p.m. It’s free, and the room fills up fast, so get there early if you want a seat.

? Fri., Aug. 7
======The Atlanta comedy scene is expanding, and will continue to grow this week with the debut of another new monthly showcase. Debuting this week, First Fridays is a new show that will debut this Friday at 9 p.m., at Sidebar in Downtown. Hosted by Damon Sumner, the show is free.99.
?
? The Weekend  One of my favorite comics is headlining the Laughing Skull all weekend in Midtown. The brilliantly silly Kurt Braunohler will headline six shows, Thursday through Sunday. Braunohler has performed on “Conan,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,”The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” and was also a regular panelist on “Chelsea Lately,” and had his own “Half Hour” special on Comedy Central. The comedian released his first album, How Do I Land?, in 2013 named after his hilarious “Cloud Project” in which he raised $6,000 on Kickstarter and hired a pilot to write the words “How Do I Land?” across the LA sky. You do not want to miss him.
?
? >> You’re going to sleep in on Sunday anyway, so why not go to the 1AM Secret Show Saturday night? One of the longest running shows in the city always features Atlanta’s best comics and routinely hosts special surprise guests — all for free. Past guests include Kyle Kinane, Kumail Nanjiani, and Craig Robinson. With so many nationally touring acts in town this week, I wouldn’t be surprised if this edition features at least one special guest. And since the line-up is always a secret, you’ll just have to find out for yourself. Show starts at 1 a.m., (Sunday if you’re pedantic) in the Atlanta Room at Smith’s Olde Bar.
