Comic’s Weekly Roundup: Samm and Jen’s Illumi-Naughty Nights

Comedian Olivia Cathcart picks her favorite comedy events for the week

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see local comics and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

? Tue., Sep. 8Last week was the debut of Atlanta’s newest weekly showcase, Happy Hour Comedy Hour. Hosts John-Michael Bond and David Perdue (two of my personal favorite comics) will be doing it every Tuesday night, at Smith’s Olde Bar. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show kicks off at 7 p.m. This one-hour show is perfect for those who can’t stay out late. This week’s show will be headlined by another one of my favorite comics, Brian Emond. $5 gets you in the door and a cup for access to the official show keg; what a deal.

? Thur., Sep. 10
? See a handful of Atlanta’s best locals on display at the Laughing Skull’s Best of Atlanta Showcase this Thursday night. Grab some food at the Vortex, then head to the back of the bar to see ten hilarious comics showcase their comedic chops. Tickets start at $17. Show’s at 8 p.m.
?
? >> Schlitz & Giggles returns to the Highland Inn Ballroom this Thursday with a line-up that includes such ATL favorites as Brian Emond, Will Copeland, and Cherith Fuller. This week’s show will be guest-hosted by the very funny Vas Sanchez. Doors open at 8 p.m.; show at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door and you might just leave home with some sweet Schlitz swag.
?
? Fri., Sep. 11 This Friday brings about the second installment of Samm and Jen’s Totally Awesome Variety Show at the Music Room. Everyone’s favorite hot messes, Samm Severin and Jen Lenny, stumble upon a secret illuminati meeting where things get pretty (like, Spring Break) crazy. All-seeing eyes are on them as they unwittingly become involved with the world’s most powerful players, accidentally solve the unexplained mysteries of the universe, and try really, really hard to get laid at Samm and Jen’s Illumi-Naughty Nights. This sketch show will also feature stand-up from Paul Gallois, Ismael Loutfi, and more. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. $5.

? The Weekend
? On Sunday, The Hangar will put on another fantastic show featuring LA comedians James Austin Johnson and Barbara Grey. You might know Grey from her podcast, Lady to Lady, on the Maximum Fun network, and you may have gotten a sneak peak at Johnson two weeks ago at Star Bar in which he did one of the funniest sets I’ve seen all year.  Whether you’re familiar with this pair or not, get your butt down to the Hangar on Sunday for what should be a fantastic show. Show’s at 8pm. $5 BYOB.
?
? >> Over the weekend, you can find Rachel Feinstein headlining the Laughing Skull. Feinstein starred in her own Comedy Central “Half Hour” last year and will premiere an hour-long special later on the network. You may have also seen Feinstein in Trainwreck, “Inside Amy Schumer,” and Amazon’s “Red Oaks.” She headlines five shows, Friday through Sunday.
