Comic’s Weekly Roundup: Tim Northern records an album at WonderRoot

Comedian Olivia Cathcart breaks down this week’s best comedy shows including Ben Palmer’s Picture Show, Big Deal Comedy, and Tim Northern’s album recording at a very special WonderComedy.

Mon., Jan. 18
======
======One of the best deals in town is Beer and Comedy Night at SweetWater Brewery. In addition to being one of the longest running shows in town (due to the tireless efforts of host Joe Pettis), beer enthusiasts get multiple refills of all the great local brews SweetWater has to offer, plus a souvenir pint, and a comedy show for just $10. That’s more booze for your buck than any two-drink-minimum room. Held every other Monday, B&C doors open at 7 p.m. with comedy kicking off at 8 p.m. Get there early for a good seat and to take advantage of the Sweet Auburn BBQ truck posted up in the parking lot.

>> Over in Little Five Points, Atlanta staple Monday Night Comedy at Star Bar will be bumping late into the night. Fifteen or so local comics will take the stage at everyone’s favorite dive bar for a free comedy show. This legendary showcase is no stranger to the occasional surprise drop-in from some of the best comics in the nation. It has certainly been the case lately, so might want to stick your neck in this week, and the next, and the next … Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; show’s at 9:30 p.m.

Wed., Jan. 20
======
Atlanta’s alt comedy scene depends on cool venues giving comics space to create. Some of the best resources are the city’s many arts communes such as Big House on Ponce. Comedians Dedrick Flynn and Will Newton have produced a myriad of comedy shows at the midtown venue, including Wednesday’s Big Deal Comedy. The two rising comics will welcome both up-and-coming and veteran comics such as Athens’ Caroline Schmidt and Shaunak Godkhindi, along with ATL’s David Perdue, John-Michael Bond, and more. Show starts at 8 p.m. $5.

The Weekend
====== The big ticket (but very reasonably priced) show of the week, is https://www.facebook.com/events/1523182231344316/WonderComedy Presents: Tim Northern Does Animals at WonderRoot. The nationally touring comedian is a regular on the comedy club circuit as well as a comedy festival favorite with bills under his belt including Montreal’s Just For Laughs, Scruffy City, and Atlanta’s inaugural Red Clay Comedy Festival — where he first performed at WonderRoot. We must have made a good impression on the Nashville comedian since he chose the venue as the site to record his new album. Come be a part of history Saturday. Bring your friends, buy the album when it comes out, and have fun searching for each other’s dumb laughs. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; show’s at 9 p.m. $8. BYOB.

>> On Sunday, Ben Palmer will be putting his multi-media comedy show, Picture Show, on at Eddie’s Attic. In addition to being funny on stage, Palmer takes his jokes to Facebook posing as a customer service agent trolling angry, entitled folks on various business’ pages. Picture Show combines stand-up with Palmer’s Internet adventures (which have earned him a JASH web-series out soon). Comedians Ismael Loutfi, Tom Russell, Olive Lynch, and Andrew George will also be slinging jokes at Eddie’s. Doors open at 5 p.m.; show’s at 6 p.m. Tickets range from $7-10.
