With a remake in the works (directed by Kenny Ortega, the original film’s original choreographer), with the hit song “Time of My Life” serving as the backdrop for a Black Eyed Peas mash-up, with Jennifer Grey’s once Streisand-esque proboscis long since remolded to a Frosty-the-Snowman-esque button size, with the film in heavy rotation on a variety of cable channels around-the-clock, and with the film’s best line now a catch-phrase with its own Urban Dictionary page, Dirty Dancing’s place as a pop culture phenomenon is rock solid.

Sometimes, the myth obscures our ability to actually see (or hear) a work itself. Just as it’s nearly impossible to listen to Sgt. Pepper’s without the gravity of its impact on musical history, it is difficult to see a film like Dirty Dancing without quotation marks around it.

It is a “meta” example of itself.

All this makes an opportunity such as this worthy of note. In honor of the film’s 25th Anniversary
(!), the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival will be screening Dirty Dancing tonight (Sunday, February 12 at 7:30 PM at the Lefont Sandy Springs), introduced by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and featuring an in-person appearance by actress Jane Brucker (Baby’s sister).

See it with an audience.

See it on the big screen.

See it in the presence of folks who love the film, who appeared in the film, and some of whom lived the Catskills summer-camp experience of the film.
