Marcia Wood Gallery to open Midtown location

Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? During its 20-year relationship with Atlanta, Marcia Wood Gallery has found a home in both Virginia-Highland and South Buckhead before settling into Castleberry Hill. Despite its success, however, the Marcia Wood just can’t seem to get settled — which is why, starting March 26, the gallery will open a second location in Midtown.

Located at the crux of Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Beltline, in a building associated with Get This Gallery and Solomon Projects, Marcia Wood Gallery Midtown will host ongoing gallery programming and events Tuesday through Saturday each week. Meanwhile, the Castleberry location will entertain unexpected programming: risk-taking, experimental, and collaborative art to match the neighborhood in which it resides. ?? ?

The gallery will inaugurate its new Midtown location with two simultaneous exhibitions. New York-based artist Kate Javens will continue her 10-year collaboration with the gallery in The Animals I Sleep With, which showcases her paintings of historical figures. Alchemy by local artist Christian Bradley West will include a combination of paintings, drawings, and sculpture in the project room. Both will be on view through April 18. ?? ?

The exhibitions to follow amalgamate into a celebration of powerful female artists: Katherine Taylor, Lucinda Bunnen, and Shawne Major. Bunnen’s exhibition, Lucinda’s World, Part III: Weathered Chromes, will display a new body of photographs of abstraction. Major will present the assemblages of minutely detailed and monumental found objects. ?? ?

The goal of the two gallery spaces is to echo the unique identities of Atlanta’s neighborhoods while still remaining physically close intown — how successful it is remains to be seen. If history is a good representation of future success, however, the odds are in their favor. ??
