Urban Cannibals in running for Daily Candy award

Image News about Calavino Donati and Doria Roberts of Urban Cannibals:

Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites, an independent grocery store and deli located in East Atlanta Village, has been selected as one of 12 finalists in Daily Candy’s “Start Small, Go Big” contest in the Food Category. The fiesty upstart has a chance to win $10,000 to expand their business as well as travel to New York City for an intensive small business conference with industry powerhouses like Designer Isaac Mizrahi and Chef Marcus Samulesson

Owners Chef Calavino Donati (best known for her defunct restaurant, Roman Lily) and Atlanta-based musician Doria Roberts entered the contest on a whim, thinking the entry would simply put them on Daily Candy’s radar for future exposure opportunities. Instead, they were pleasantly surprised to see their name listed among the finalists on Sept. 9. “Honestly, we only checked their site to see who we would vote for,” says Roberts, “but quickly realized we’d be voting for ourselves!”

The pair has launched an unapologetic and relentless social-media campaign on their Facebook page and Twitter feed to get current and potential fans to vote every day until the contest officially closes Wednesday, Sept. 29. Winners will be announced on Thursday, Sept. 30 and, if chosen, the couple will head to Manhattan Oct. 27-29.

Donati says, “We’re really hoping there’s a sense of hometown pride amongst our fanbase & community since we’re the only business from Atlanta in the running in all three categories. It would be amazing to be able to represent the city we’ve both worked in and called home for 15 years this way.”
