Omnivore - My Parents’ Basement opens just in time for Dragon Con

The craft beer bar, eatery, and comic shop opened in Avondale Estates last week

Pow! Zoinks! Cheers! Just in time for upcoming DragonCon, the nerdiest establishment to hit Atlanta, My Parents’ Basement, opened in Avondale Estates last week. How else could we describe a place with 32 taps of craft beer, nostalgic bites, and a comic bookstore with the latest fan favorites, classics, and hard to find comics? Bazinga.

A trio of beer loving, comics aficionados is responsible for this clever mash-up of fun located in the old James Joyce spot in Avondale Estates. Dave DeFeo, Tim Ensor, and Lawson Wright, longtime nearby Decatur residents dreamed up their perfect hangout, and My Parents’ Basement was born. “There’s an extreme side to both beer and comics,” Ensor said in a release. “And they both share the collectability factor. You have uber beer nerds who collect the rare cask beers, and you have uber comics nerds who wait in line to trade that one-off, special comic.”

My Parents’ Basement serves lunch and dinner as well as weekend brunch. Expect an “impeccable beer selection and craft sodas” with 32 taps highlighting Georgia’s growing brewery scene and an eclectic selection of brews from around the world. Ensor was beer manager at Leon’s Full Service and DeFeo hails from Brickstore. They know beer.

If the free video games don’t distract too much, the menu of small plates and bites looks fun in itself. There is a dish called chicken IN waffles that sounds intriguing. Paging Jim Gaffigan: house-made hot pocket. Brunch promises a footlong pimento toad in the hole and some cold-brew coffee.

“The level of nerdery that’s going to happen at our bar is going to be awesome,” says DeFeo.
