What’s happening in Atlanta today

Back On the Farm

Swan Coach House - 3130 Slaton Drive Atlanta, GA 30305 $225. 6 p.m.

For the fifth year in a row, the Atlanta History Center will host an evening of farm-to-table goodness, supporting Smith Family Farm’s youth programming and animal care as well as their 4-H educational partnership. Chair Mary Calhoun and executive event chef Virginia Willis, the James Beard award-winning cookbook author, will lead an all-women team of chefs, farmers and mixologists in a Southern-influenced feast of epic proportions. Light bites and cocktails will be served on the farm prior to a multi-course supper at the Grand Overlook Ballroom. The line-up features Colleen Conrad (Whole Foods Market), Lis Hernandez (Arepa Mia), Jiyeon Lee (Heirloom Market BBQ), Deborah VanTrece (Twisted Soul Cookhouse and Pours), Jenni Harris (White Oak Pastures), Kimya Dongan (Miller Union) and Mercedes O’Brien (Gunshow) among others.

Lizz Wright, Leeda “Lyric” Jones

Variety Playhouse - 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30307 $41. 7 p.m.

Georgia born and bred R&B and contemporary jazz vocalist Lizz Wright returns with a new album, titled Grace. For this latest release, Wright’s husky and soulful voice wraps around a collection of rearranged covers handpicked by producer Joe Henry from sources as varied as Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. For this tour, she’ll have a multi-media production of photographs taken on a recent road trip where she connected with family and strangers to “hear the true voice of the South.” The show promises to be an immersive, expressive and moving experience as this classy and sophisticated singer connects songs with the images.

Broken Social Scene, Frightened Rabbit

Tabernacle - 152 Luckie St. N.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 $29-$41. 8 p.m.

Tickets

Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics, Starr Duncan-Lowe, Jason Collier, Lola Cole

The Vista Room - 2836 Lavista Rd, Decatur, GA 30033 $15-$20. 9 p.m.

It’s been 60 years since the birth of Stax Records, the record company that defined Southern soul music in the 1960s, with artists like Otis Redding, the Staple Singers and Isaac Hayes. To celebrate, the Vista Room, in partnership with Stax Records’ Soulsville Foundation, hosts a night of gospel-infused tributes and covers. Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics, whose buttery, swaggering sound might be Atlanta’s closest answer to the Stax legacy, headlines a show that promises both deep cuts and soul classics. A do-gooder plus: Ticket sales benefit the Stax Music Academy, a Memphis after-school program for student musicians.

Supermystery: A ‘Nancy Drew’ and ‘Hardy Boys’ improvised show

The Village Theatre - 349 Decatur St. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30312 $10. 10:30 p.m.

There’s a mystery to solve, and Nancy Drew is on the case with her best pals, Bess and George. But so are the Hardy boys, Frank and Joe. Mystery, romance and flashlights abound in this improvised show.
