What’s happening in Atlanta today

Paul Graham: The Whiteness of the Whale

High Museum of Art - 1280 Peachtree St. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30309 Free-$14.50. 10 a.m.

Paul Graham, an internationally renowned British photographer, has been at the forefront of contemporary documentary photography since the 1980s. His work is celebrated for its unique blend of documentary observation and conceptual innovation. This exhibition brings together three of Graham’s most celebrated bodies of work, made across the United States between 1998 and 2011: “American Night” (1998-2002), “a shimmer of possibility” (2004-2006) and “The Present” (2009-2001). Linked by a common subject matter, the work gathered here examines the state of race and social class in America while using the very nature of sight and the medium of photography as metaphors for inequality, invisibility and the ways photographs inflect our perceptions of the world. This exhibition is organized by Pier 24 Photography.

The Coathangers kick off a tour supporting their latest Parasite EP, released June 30 via Suicide Squeeze Records, with Philadelphia-based rockers Residuels. The group stays true to its breakneck house show roots while honing in on excellence in the name of punk-pop songwriting. Gospel garage-punk outfit the Gartrells, featuring members of Black Lips and the Gaye Blades, and Latinx punk outfit Bitter join the Coathangers’ send-off.

Floral Print, Slow Mass, Great Deceivers, Newark Wilder

The Mammal Gallery - 91 Broad St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 $5-$10. 9 p.m.

Experimental jazz-rock trio Floral Print (featuring CL music contributor Paul DeMerritt) released its woo EP in 2015, bringing together deconstructed elements of trombone, cello and keyboard arrangements, with billowing vocals and sauntering prog-style guitar. The group has since released another single, “Kevin,” which features a simpler composition with fewer personnel and a heavier focus on twangy bends in guitar, subtle bass and dismantled harmonics. Joining the group is Chicago-based post-hardcore band Slow Mass, which is on tour supporting its Treasure Pains EP. Chicago-based alt-rock Great Deceivers and Atlanta’s psych-punk outfit Newark Wilder round out the bill.
