5 things to do: Red Bull Culture Clash Atlanta - August 24 2017

What’s happening in Atlanta today

FamilyHood ATL Art Show VIII

Eventide Brewing - 1015 Grant St. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30315 Free. 5:30 p.m.

Eventide revives its monthly last Friday art show, giving artists of all media a platform to share their work with the community and meet other creatives. The August lineup features Britt Vasina, Hannah Pearman, David Ahn, Patrick DeAngelis, Su and more along with live painting by Freekybeer, Adam Pee and Austin Blue. Swaansongs and Foster play live, and Doggy Dogg brings the, well, dogs.

Voiceless documentary premiere

The Center for Civil and Human Rights - 100 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. N.W. Atlanta, GA 30313 Free-$25. 6 p.m.

In 2016, Terence Lester walked 648 miles from Atlanta to Washington, D.C. to call attention to the inequalities affecting America. He filmed his journey and documented the stories of the people he met along the way. Lester founded Love Beyond Walls, an organization that brings attention to homelessness and poverty.

JavaDrome Presents: Ninja III: The Domination

JavaVino - 579 N. Highland Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30307 Free. 8:30 p.m.

JavaDrome presents absurd ’80s martial arts film Ninja III: The Domination. Bear witness to a possessed aerobics instructors, a V8 juice fetish, a kickass opening sequence and the hallmarks of a video rental from the era. A ninja spirit takes over telephone linewoman Christie’s body to seek revenge on the assassins who killed him. Christie (as Ninja) will travel from ancient Japanese exorcisms to battles at the YMCA and to a ninja stronghold in the Arizona desert. As one critic said of the cannon Group film, “It distills the 80’s down into diamond-hard pellets, dumps them in a shotgun, and unloads both barrels right in your face.” Admission and popcorn are complimentary, but buying food and drinks on site is pretty kickass.

We Were Going to Talk Through This Anyway

Relapse Theatre - 380 14th St. Atlanta, GA 30318 $5. 8:30 p.m.

It’s a sin to talk through a movie, but that’s exactly the name of the game at Relapse. Since every acclaimed cinema critic couldn’t commit to dropping in for a panel, Atlanta’s funniest and fiercest comedians are bravely stepping up to fill in for them. Helmed by the hilarious Katie Hughes, three comics will riff their way through public domain films of cinematic lore. It’s “Mystery Science Theatre 3K” meets your friend’s group text thread about last week’s “Bachelorette.” It’s guaranteed to be the best time spent watching the worst movies you’ve ever had (unless you’re the one person who really love The Emoji Movie).

Red Bull Culture Clash Atlanta

787 Windsor - 787 Windsor St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30315 $25. 9 p.m.

Red Bull Culture Clash revives an old school Jamaican tradition of pitting teams of musicians against other teams in a friendly sound clash-style competition. Four teams EarDrummers led by Mike WiLL Made-It, Enjoylife led by WondaGurl, Unruly led by Popcaan and Disturbing London featuring Tinie Tempah set up in four corners in the big room at 787 Windsor to go all in with a set of their distinct styles, original material, remixes and whatever else they have up their collective sleeves. Trap music, grime, reggae, hip-hop and R&B are the order of the day. BONUS: For one round each act performs in the style of their competition. Winner will be picked by a show of applause and a decibel meter. But remember, it’s a sound clash, not a battle.
