What’s happening in Atlanta today

Remaking Raiders: The Greatest Fan Film Ever Made

SCADShow - 173 14th St. Atlanta, GA 30309 Free-$5. 5:30 p.m.

Making a fan film is one thing, but making a shot-by-shot full length recreation is a whole other ballgame. Three Mississippi teens did just that. After a screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation, the final recreation of Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark, join director Eric Zala for a discussion. He will address the seven-year filming process, the original classic and what its like to be the subject of the critically acclaimed Netflix documentary Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made.

On Waters of Time

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center - 980 Briarcliff Road N.E. Atlanta, GA 30306 Free-$5. 7 p.m.

For blacksmith, metalworker and artist Corrina Sephora, much of life’s journeys can be captured by the ocean. Her grandfather was a sea captain and her father introduced her to the art of boat building, instilling in her the themes she continues to explore in her art today. On Thurs., June 29, Sephora’s latest exhibition, On Waters of Time, will open at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. The exhibition will showcase Sephora’s metal sculptures, which use boat and water imagery to capture themes of immigration, family and memory. To accompany Sephora’s work, other mixed-media drawings which use boat and water imagery will be featured in the gallery. Opening reception: Thurs., June 29, 7 p.m.

Big Gay Babadook Screening and Party

Plaza Theatre - 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave., N.E. Atlanta, GA 30306 $10. 8 p.m.

Meme sensation and queer icon the Babadook makes its Atlanta Pride Month appearance at the Plaza Theatre’s Big Gay Babadook Screening and Party. The event includes a screening of the 2014 Australian horror film The Babadook, in which the wide-mouthed figure made its first appearance. The meme’s origin story involves a Netflix genre mix-up and the historic demonization of LGBTQ identities. Needless to say, online queer communities have been babashook by this fearless new addition to obscure symbols of pride. Attendees of the screening will be able to witness Baba’s humble origins as he serves up fierce babalewks on the big screen, all the while sipping on the Plaza’s featured Babadook cocktail.

Cosmic Trigger, the Ruination, Michael Potter, dialogue

529 - 529 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $5. 8 p.m.

Since 2010, Gage Gilmore has become known to many in Atlanta’s music scene as the bassist for experimental psych-rock trio deadCAT. He’s since broken out on his own with his latest solo project Cosmic Trigger, which debuted last year following the release of his self-titled record. Cosmic Trigger treads territory that will be immediately familiar to deadCAT fans as buzzing electronics, kaleidoscopic songwriting and sprawling sonic experiments form the bedrock of the project’s sound. Gilmore is set to perform alongside other genre-bending local acts such as the Ruination and dialogue, making the lineup a must-see for those who want to witness the forefront of psychedelic experimentation in Atlanta.
