SEE and DO: Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires play the Earl on June 30
The Atlanta by-way-of Alabama outfit marries backwoods twang and breathless punk with ‘Youth Detention’
Barreling out of Birmingham, Alabama, Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires return just in time for another scorching summer in the South. Their latest record, Youth Detention (Don Giovanni Records), finds the band at their frenetic best, once again marrying backwoods twang and breathless punk. “Under the Sheets Of White Noise,” the album’s standout track, is a wordy, clamorous anthem delivered at breakneck speed, reminiscent of both Ted Leo and fellow Alabaman Patterson Hood.
Joining Bains on the bill is Birmingham native and art world fixture Lonnie Holley, whose singular sound has captivated audiences since his debut album, Just Before Music, was released in 2012. At 67 years old, Holley and his stark spirituals sound astoundingly fresh, simultaneously calling to mind the sci-fi soundtracks he enjoyed as a child, as well as the avant-garde soulfulness of Robert Wyatt. Atlanta’s premier Latinx punks Bitter and rock ‘n’ roll storytellers Reconciler round out this super-stacked southern bill.
With Lonnie Holley, Bitter, Reconciler. $10-$12. 9 p.m. Fri., June 30. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.
