Jesus and Mary Chain play the Masquerade

Scottish brothers William and Jim Reid bring their noisy post-punk juggernaut to the States

Pair an electric guitar with a plugged-in amplifier and you’ve got a very powerful thing. Few bands embody that concept more than the Jesus and Mary Chain. The Scottish combo spent most of the ’80s and ’90s weaponizing the wall of sound with classic albums such as Psychocandy, Darklands, and Honey’s Dead. Led by expressionless brothers William and Jim Reid, JAMC wrote classic pop melodies, imbued them with a post-punk snarl, recorded them in a haze of reverb and distortion, and played them live in short, volatile bursts. Word on the street (er, internet) is that next spring, JAMC will release Damage and Joy, the group’s first proper album since 1998. Start looking for your earplugs now.
