5 things to do: Lonnie Holley

What’s happening in Atlanta today

Lonnie Holley, Ben Sollee

Atlanta Contemporary - 535 Means St. N.W. Atlanta, GA 30318 $20 donation. 7:30 p.m.

Lonnie Holley’s mind is a tuning fork resonating with the energies of the universe, and channeled into his live, improvised performances. For this show, Holley, Atlanta’s quintessential outsider, creates the soundtrack to his solo exhibition of sculptures and drawings. His visual art, organ-based songs, and freak-outs/gentle musings on stage illustrate his incredible ability to communicate unconventional wisdom about the otherworldly beauty found in everyday life. RSVPs aren’t required, but an email to groceryonhome at gmail.com saves a seat for you.

Atmosphere, Brother Ali, deM Atlas, Plain Ole Bill, One Last Word

Center Stage - 1374 W. Peachtree St. N.W. Atlanta, GA 30309 $24-$27. 8 p.m.

For nearly three decades, Atmosphere has endured as one the most consistent and hard-working groups in underground hip-hop. Rapper Sean Daley (Slug) and producer Anthony Davis (Ant) craft a sound teetering on brutal self-reflection and absurd party music. For their latest album, Fishing Blues, the core duo recruited all-star talents such as DOOM and Kool Keith to inject their own flows into the mix. On “When the Lights Go Out,” Slug outshines his heavyweight collaborators with lines like, “By the time you hear the song I’ll be singing it from down at county jail/Still filled to the maximum/So fuck Bill Clinton with his saxophone.”

Reloaded: A Comedy Show

Relapse Theatre - 380 14th St. Atlanta, GA 30318 8 p.m.

The Red Pill Players combine sketch, improv and stand-up for their weekly show. Stand-up comedians take four minutes to inspire longform sketch scenes. Then, a performer (musicians, dancers, anyone!) takes the stage. The Players close each evening with a “Whose Line”-style game show. DJsugarcut provides the entertainment.

Truckfighters, Kings Destroy, Kr’rth, the Buzzards of Fuzz

The Drunken Unicorn - 736 Ponce de Leon Place N.E. Atlanta, GA 30306 $13-$15. 8:30 p.m.

Dorothy feat. Robert Ansley, Ash Lauryn, Deep South/Techno Sisters

529 - 529 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E. Atlanta, GA 30316 $5 suggested donation. 10 p.m.
