Quick Bites: Dining + Design returned, HOBNOB gets a second location, and more

HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern will open its second metro Atlanta location this spring in Town Brookhaven. The newest location will be located in the former Smash Kitchen & Bar space (804 Town Blvd., Suite 1010).

Pano Karatassos, son of famed restaurateur I. Pano Karatassos and executive chef at the renowned Kyma Greek restaurant, will publish his first cookbook through Rizzoli in winter 2018. The yet to be titled tome will focus on Greek cuisine.

Ford Fry’s second El Felix is slated to open at SunTrust Park in the spring of 2017, and rumor has it that the project will reunite the prolific restaurateur with designer Smith Hanes, who designed Fry’s first restos like JCT. Kitchen & Bar, No. 246 and The Optimist.

Auburn, Alabama-based Chicken Salad Chick will fill the space left empty by the closure of 521 Kitchen & Que on Roswell Road, according to Tomorrow’s News Today. Chicken Salad Chick features “15 original chicken salad flavors, as well as gourmet soups, flavorful side salads and freshly-baked desserts.” Chicken Salad Chick has around a dozen Georgia locations.

The Four Seasons Atlanta has hired Lasheeda Perry as its new pastry chef, Perry is a five-year veteran of Four Seasons properties across the country.

The Einstein Bros. Bagels at 1676 Monroe Drive is slated to be demolished and replaced with a PNC Bank branch, according to What Now Atlanta.

Today, Fri., Jan., 27, Madre + Mason bids Atlanta farewell as co-owners Doria Roberts and Calavino Donati close their Morningside restaurant. While the closing party is free from 7 p.m., the AJC reports that the partners hope to use the sales proceeds and guest donations to purchase the building that houses Urban Cannibals.

Papi’s Cuban & Caribbean Grill, will open its newest location on Mon., Jan. 30 in Emory Point. The seventh metro Atlanta Papi’s, the Emory Point location will be open for lunch and dinner, serving favorites such as stir-fried shrimp with red and green peppers, arroz con pollo, and its signature Cuban sandwiches. 

Cobb County’s iconic chicken restaurant will close and be completely renovated over the next several months. The Big Chicken will reopen the second week of April with a new screened-in porch and separate patio.



The owners of Muss & Turner’s have announced plans to open a second location in East Cobb this March. The group will close their Common Quarter (1205 Johnson Ferry Road) concept on Feb. 4 and transform it into a Muss & Turner’s. Co-owner Ryan Turner said the new Muss and Turner’s will bring a “chef-driven, flex-casual restaurant” to the East Cobb community.

Buckhead wine bar Vine & Tap has new top toque and a transformed dining menu. Ryan Catherall, son of notable Atlanta restaurateur Tom Catherall, has added new dishes to the menu, such as a warm Brussels sprout salad with goat cheese and head-on Georgia White Shrimp.





Houston, Texas-based Salata, a fast-casual concept that offers custom salads and wraps, will replace the recently shuttered Moe’s at Atlantic Station later this spring, according to Tomorrow’s News Today.

Oakhurst’s Revolution Doughnuts is set to open its second metro location at 745 Edgewood Ave. in Inman Park within the few days. Revolution specializes in organic vegan doughnuts.

Southern comfort food spot Baked (480 John Wesley Dobbs Ave. N.E.) has closed its restaurant in the Old Fourth Ward. The East Cobb location closed in March.



Mylinh Cao, owner of Vietnamese restaurant Dua and Fish Bowl Poke, is adding a bubble tea bar to her Downtown empire. Cao will expand Dua into the former Good Phellaz Barbershop (56 Peachtree St. N.W.) space to house the boba bar and add dining space. Cao told What Now Atlanta that the 3,000-square-foot addition could be open by April or May.



NYC's The Halal Guys will open its first Georgia restaurant in Chamblee this Sat., Jan., 28 at 4929 Buford Highway. The first 50 people in line will be rewarded with a free entrée platter and fountain drink, and the first 200 will get free T-shirts. The day will also feature live entertainment, games, and prizes.

Punch Bowl Social, a Denver-based gastropub concept with traditional table games, arcade, karaoke, and bowling, is slated to open a 27,000-square-foot, two-story project at the Battery at SunTrust Park. Chef Hugh Acheson (Spiller Park Coffee, Empire State South) has been tapped to design a Southern-inspired menu and craft beverage program. Punch Bowl Social is expected to open at the development in September 2017.

The Emory Village location of Lucky’s Burger & Brew closed on Jan. 15 after less than two years in operation."

Oakhurst’s Revolution Doughnuts is set to open its second metro location at 745 Edgewood Ave. in Inman Park within the few days. Revolution specializes in organic vegan doughnuts.



The owners of Muss & Turner’s have announced plans to open a second location in East Cobb this March. The group will close their Common Quarter (1205 Johnson Ferry Road) concept on Feb. 4 and transform it into a Muss & Turner’s. Co-owner Ryan Turner said the new Muss and Turner’s will bring a “chef-driven, flex-casual restaurant” to the East Cobb community.

Southern comfort food spot Baked (480 John Wesley Dobbs Ave. N.E.) has closed its restaurant in the Old Fourth Ward. The East Cobb location closed in March.



Mylinh Cao, owner of Vietnamese restaurant Dua and Fish Bowl Poke, is adding a bubble tea bar to her Downtown empire. Cao will expand Dua into the former Good Phellaz Barbershop (56 Peachtree St. N.W.) space to house the boba bar and add dining space. Cao told What Now Atlanta that the 3,000-square-foot addition could be open by April or May.



NYC's The Halal Guys will open its first Georgia restaurant in Chamblee this Sat., Jan., 28 at 4929 Buford Highway. The first 50 people in line will be rewarded with a free entrée platter and fountain drink, and the first 200 will get free T-shirts. The day will also feature live entertainment, games, and prizes.

Punch Bowl Social, a Denver-based gastropub concept with traditional table games, arcade, karaoke, and bowling, is slated to open a 27,000-square-foot, two-story project at the Battery at SunTrust Park. Chef Hugh Acheson (Spiller Park Coffee, Empire State South) has been tapped to design a Southern-inspired menu and craft beverage program. Punch Bowl Social is expected to open at the development in September 2017.

The new name is a reference to the longleaf pine, an evergreen indigenous to the Southeast. Hopkins says the rebranding will cut out the middleman between the Garden and diners. Hopkins will stay on as a chef adviser while Jason Paolini steps into the executive chef role and become an employee of the Garden.

Mani Roy, owner of 90s star magnet Touch of India and most recently Desi Spice, has sold Desi Spice and is retiring from the restaurant business, according to the Saporta Report. Roy became known around Atlanta for serving celebrities and politicians, including Janet and Jermaine Jackson, Ted Turner, Jane Fonda, the Rolling Stones, Diana Ross the DaLai Lama, and Desmond Tutu. Craft Izakaya, one of Krog Street Market’s anchor restaurants, will become a “fast-casual, take-away sushi bar” named Makimono. Craft will close this Sun., Jan. 15, and open in a much smaller footprint as Makimono on Wed., Jan. 18. Executive chef Jey Oh will stay on and offer eight chef-driven sushi rolls — made by two sushi roll machines, customizable sushi rolls, rice bowls, and Japanese and Korean ice cream bars. The dining area will become seating for the market, and

Second Self is bringing its cocoa and vanilla Valentine’s Day brew, Bleeding Heart, back for a third year. The red velvet cake-inspired beer can be found on tap and packaged at local bars, restaurants, and shops from mid-January and through February.

The former Seven Hens on N. Decatur Road is now Bullgogi, a Korean street food spot. Bullgogi (2140 N. Decatur Road) features Korean and poke rice bowl dishes. The concept is the brainchild of James Baek, who developed Teriyaki 101, Sumo Hibachi, and other Asian-centric eateries.

Mani Roy, owner of 90s star magnet Touch of India and most recently Desi Spice, has sold Desi Spice and is retiring from the restaurant business, according to the Saporta Report. Roy became known around Atlanta for serving celebrities and politicians, including Janet and Jermaine Jackson, Ted Turner, Jane Fonda, the Rolling Stones, Diana Ross the DaLai Lama, and Desmond Tutu. The new owner of Desi Spice will keep the same name, menu, and chef.

Cast Iron has hired a new beverage director. Michelle Louise Bird has replaced opening beverage director Bradford Tolleson at the new O4W bistro. Bird has had previous bar gigs at Kimball House, Leon’s Full Service, Empire State South, and Revival.

CPA Lewis Jeffries has filed plans with the city of Atlanta for an “upscale, southern-themed social club” with 10 local craft beers on tap and classic cocktails at 660 Irwin St. CL previously reported that Jeffries would be opening Lingering Shade, a beer garden, at Irwin Street Market. He told the Atlanta Business Chronicle things are “not quite ready and still under development.”

The menu features Korean fried chicken and waffles, bibimbap, and Korean hotcakes with brown sugar and syrup. Diners can also get bottomless mimosas along with the regular cocktail menu.
