Craft beer lovers, rejoice! Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 85 into law on Monday, allowing breweries and distilleries to sell booze directly to consumers. The bill goes into effect on Sept. 1. It allows breweries to sell 3,000 barrels of beer to customers a year; distilleries can sell 500 barrels of spirits in the same time frame. Visitors to breweries and distilleries can also take home cases and bottles.



A self-described bgastropub delivering an education in the art of food and beer,b Public School 404 (930 Howell Mill Rd.) opened Monday in Westsidebs the Brady complex. Originating in Southern California, the scholastic-themed restaurant is filled with schoolroom relics like globes, textbooks and microscopes juxtaposed with 16 taps and an open kitchen. From the bar there will be twists on classic cocktails. Early standouts from the menu include a Nutella cookie sandwich, chicken and waffles with bacon red eye gravy, a roasted poblana and quinoa burger and crispy buffalo cauliflower.

Gone since late summer of 2016, the beloved Spidie sandwich has returned to Krog Street Marketbs Ticonderoga Club, but you can only get it Monday evenings from 5 p.m. until it runs out. In other TC news, the patio will soon become a snacks and drinks spot called The Pineapple Room.

A couple of lauded chefs are on to new adventures. Landon Thompson, founding executive chef at Cooks and Soldiers, cooked his last dish at the Westside hotspot at the end of April. John Castellucci is serving in the interim as an official replacement has not yet been announced.

Nick Melvin, chef/partner of Venkmanbs in Old Fourth Ward moved on from his chef role this past weekend to spend more time with his family, according to the restaurant. His protC)gC), sous chef Keenan Boyles, will be stepping into the executive chef role.B

Ryan Smith (formerly of 101 Steak and Southbound) has joined Sandy Springsb Food 101 (4969 Roswell Rd.) as executive chef. bWith Smithbs arrival, guests can expect more seafood and vegetarian selections, and new dinner options,b the restaurant noted in a press release. B The sweet and salty chocolate cake remains, however. We checked.

Taverna Pizzeria and Risotteria is now open in The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, serving traditional Italian fare with signature risotto dishes. This is the first Georgia location of the concept, which also has restaurants in Texas, Laguna Beach, California and Mexico. The menu, created by executive corporate chef and Tuscany native Renato De Pirro, features five risottos, salads, antipasti, fresh seafood and stone-fired pizzas.

Chef/owner Jamie Adams of il Giallo (5920 Roswell Rd.) in Sandy Springs is participating in Chefbs Cycle for the fourth consecutive year. The 300-mile race through California raises funds for No Kid Hungry, which seeks to help end childhood hunger. This year his restaurant partner Leonardo Moura joins him in the cause. Their goal is to raise $15,000. Before the ride on May 16-18, il Giallo will host a Robert Mondavi wine pairing dinner on Weds., May 10 to benefit No Kid Hungry.

Speaking of No Kid Hungry, Atlantabs Taste of the Nation event held on April 20 raised a whopping $795,000 for the charity. Leading this yearbs event as chairmen were Pano Karatassos, founder and CEO of the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, and George McKerrow, president and CEO of Tedbs Montana Grill. TV personality and restaurateur Cat Cora served as honorary chef and entertainer while rapper-turned-restaurateur Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges of Chicken+Beer was the eveningbs honorary chair.B Chef Kevin Rathbun took up auctioneer duty on his chef dinner, garnering a giant price tag for the charity.B
