Quick Bites: Mary Hoopa's and Decatur Market now open, Cultured South kombucha taproom coming to West End and more

CHICKEN-N-BEER: Mary Hoopa's House of Fried Chicken & Oysters is now open in East Lake.

After a long wait, One Eared Stag chef Robert Phalen’s Mary Hoopa’s House of Fried Chicken + Oysters opened last week in East Lake (2371 Hosea Williams Dr. SE). The focus is on, well, chicken and beer and the name comes from Phalen’s mother-in-law’s family friend and caretaker. Look for her hand-written framed recipes while you nosh.

Decatur Market, an upscale grocery and deli with a wide selection of local beer and wine, is now open across the street from Kimball House at 308 E Howard Ave. Look for Emerald City Bagels and other local products like Doux South pickles and Creature Comforts beer.

Attention, health fiends! Golda Kombucha founder Melanie Wade is opening Cultured South, a kombucha taproom and fermentation shop in the Lee + White development along the Beltline’s Westside trail, this coming May. The 6,000 square foot space will be filled with fermented and probiotic rich offerings. 

SweetWater Brewery is legal! Their 21st anniversary party on Sat., Feb. 17 will be full of live music and brews from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

This year’s Team Hidi 6 benefit for The Giving Kitchen raised a whopping $625,000 on at the event held at ASW Distillery’s Stave Room on Jan. 28. Part of this year’s strategic plan includes extending emergency assistance grants for restaurant industry workers into other counties across the state of Georgia. 

Now you can order bratwurst or a pâté sandwich with fries and a cold brew midday. Edgewood Avenue’s Georgia Beer Garden is open for lunch.

Wanna take a whiskey walk? Buckhead’s Southern Art and Bourbon Bar hosts its first Whiskey Walk on Fri., Feb. 23. From 7 to 9 p.m., guests can sip through extensive tastings by ASW Distillery and 18.21 Bitters and paired bites from chef de cuisine David Bartlett. 

There’s a new ramen pop-up of sorts. Midtown’s 5Church changes its selections weekly for its Ramen Mondays. This past week chef Scott Innis listed seared duck and braised oxtail as choices in his comforting bowls. 

The Clairmont Road space recently vacated by Mason Tavern, which closed this past fall, will soon re-open as Ms. Icey’s Kitchen & Bar. Perhaps it can bring back the glory days of when the spot was held down by popular Tanner’s Rotisserie Chicken. 

You can get an Impossible Burger and bring your dog too. Grindhouse Killer Burgers is opening soon on Memorial Drive. The patio is a thing of beauty.

Urban Tree Cidery has two seasonal ciders available for the first time in bottles. Das Hops is a dry cider with double hop infusion. Vintage Gala is a single apple variety cider. Both are available at their Westside tasting room (1465 Howell Mill Rd. N.W.) along with a selection of local bars, restaurants, and shops.
