Few bands are confident, relevant, and savvy enough to successfully co-opt There’s A Riot Goin’ On as their album title in 2018. Borrowing the name of their 15th studio album from Sly and The Family Stone’s 1971 masterpiece, rock’s preeminent anti-heroes Yo La Tengo continue to adapt and evolve during what is for many a moment of darkness. At once soothing and ominous, Riot showcases the trio’s mastery of tension, frequently pitting pastoral scenes against ramshackle noise. While the album’s lyrical content is suggestive of camaraderie during times of crisis, and alludes to America’s current political climate, a group as seasoned as Yo La Tengo hardly has to rely on words to make a statement.
