Dr. Dog takes a new direction
‘Critical Equation’ returns to old-school techniques of production
Philly psych rock quintet Dr. Dog pushed outside of their comfort zone with the recent release of 10th album, Critical Equation. Compared to 2017’s Abandoned Mansion, the latest record returns to time-honored methods of splicing and recording. The group left much of the album in the hands of producer Gus Seyffert (Bedouine, Michael Kiwanuka). The full-length was recorded with 100 percent analog and never touched a computer until it was mastered for digital distribution. Everything was recorded to 16 track 2” tape and pieced together with a razor blade and tape.
“It was extremely challenging at times, but it was so much fun to be working in this old-school way,” guitar and vocalist Zach Miller says.
Additionally, the band will soon release a music video. Despite homing back to vintage production techniques, Dr. Dog pushes forward in an era that is continually changing. Catch the group at the Tabernacle tonight before they carry on with their national tour.
